hopefully a nose tackle.

We do not need a NT. We are set with Bunkley/Hicks. Ryan does NOT use space eaters.

Pretty sure it will be some guy that none of us have heard of.. which would only make this board that much more tolerable

How can you expect Collins in round three when we just passed on Jones in the first?

I know it may not be a popular pick, but I'd love Stedman Bailey, WR from West Virginia.

hope so.

What have we seen with either playing at this position in this defense before?

Nothing.

Just trying to get a conversation started.

I am endorsing taking Denard Robinson in the 6th. Count it.

I've heard Margus might be dropping.

Watch out for Trevardo Williams. Pass rusher suited for a 34, small compared to Irvin.

Lutzenkerken from Auburn.
Have no idea how to spell it.

Bunkley did a good job getting penetration when with the eagles and broncos. Spags misused him big time(along with about the whole damn defense not named Jordan/Lofton last year). Ryan runs a 1-gap where the linemen(all 3 of them) take 1 gap and penetrate into it. It's right up Bunkley's alley.

Hicks showed he could penetrate in the very few time Spags played him(frick Spags and Ellis).

People only think we need a NT because they think the ONLY thing a NT does in a 3-4 is hold a guard and the center. That is not Ryan's 1-gap scheme. That is the classic 2-gap scheme where all 3 linemen are asked to hold their blocks and occupy 2 gaps and let the LBs make play.

Ryan's scheme also factored into why we may not have picked yet another OLB. In a traditional 2-gap the OLBs are the primary pass rushers. In Ryan's scheme all 3 linemen rush the passer along with 1-2 LBs(not always just the OLBs but more often than the ILBs). This means the onus is not just on the OLBs to get to the QB.

Saints will draft a guy from Furman and he'll eventually end up as an All-pro while our first rounder becomes mediocre like the rest of our first rounders. That's just my guess.

This. It's a shame, because he would be a great fit, but that kid HAS to get out of NOLA.

I say a left tackle from Bullfart, Iowa that we've never heard of who makes the Pro Bowl in year 3 and leaves for way more than he's worth when he hits free agency.

Cornelius Washington could be a guy to watch. I think he'll be a better pro than college player. 6'4" 265 and started all 4 years at Georgia.

so Bunkley wouldn't fit as much.. but I could see Hicks doing so... I guess.

I mean both were so misused last year its hard to gauge what they can really do.

What frustrates me is how Hawthorne, Bunkley, and Chamberlain were brought in the same time Spags was. To me, that says we think they'll fit what he wants to do on defense.

I'm right there with you in the optimistic approach but to not have any doubts at all...? I just can't get past that.

No Bunkley definitely fits because he is a penetrating DT, not a space eater. He made a name stuffing runs in the back field.

And Spags obviously isn't a very good talent evaluator(he played fricking Ellis more than any other DT!) or coach. Clear now he made his name off of a good Giants line. Ask Rams fans how they feel about him. Many tried to warn us when we got him.

So I wouldn't read anything into the players we brought in with Spags. I think Payton had more to do with Lofton, Hawthorne, and Bunkley than Spags as he had some input before his suspension began.

Chamberlain and that CB from the Rams was obviously him and both were shite(in fairness Chamberlain was injured).

Lofton and Hawthorne are not zone LBs so they did not fit what Spags did. Hawthorne was out of position(he played middle previously and would have fit better on the weakside, but Spags put him at strongside) and played a lot of under zone.

Lofton was lucky enough to play MLB and have enough talent to overcome the Spags.

but that was usually when the Saints were in a 4-3 defense.

last year we got gashed in the run game when he wasn't in there. We got killed with our nickel and dime people in there.

being a 3-4 run stuffer is different from being a 4-3 tackle. I'm hopeful he can do it but it isn't the same thing.

the Saints did have injury issues there last year with Hawthorne, Vilma, and Chamberlain also. I just can't get past having doubts there(health wise mainly). I'm looking forward to seeing what Hawthorne can do moving forward though when healthy and playing a more natural position.

He really didn't have much help last year but I guess there was a lot going wrong at that spot last year. Joe Vitt missing half the season was is a starting point...

Seems like Rob Ryan may liken Bunkley to Jay Ratliff as undersized for the 3-4 nose tackle spot but a great penetrator.

Exactly.

I mean, this is the same guy who in Cleveland moved Shaun Rogers to DE to penetrate from the outside instead of using him as a space eating NT like we tried to do. And Rogers was great that year.
