Meh, he does play well with a team that has a lead most of the game.
Should be the same story with us.

nope, don't want to bring anyone in that would take playing time from any of the younger guys on the line

Nice try.

THIS
He was special and the Colts rewarded him for his years there. The disparity between sacks of what he would get, and what our other DE would get isn't enough to justify $14 million and draft picks.
It is a typical bait situation with the Colts trying to unload someone who is supposedly their best player...he's too expensive IMO

Freeney would have to restructure his contract with any team that traded for him. I would rather have him in there, and just cut Will Smith. And Freeney would be great for Junior and Tez to learn from.

Its a new deffense for everyone on the team.
I will not say this about anyone. And I predict I'll get in many arguments against this defense for those who don't preform this season.
ETA: For a 7th, I'll take freeney. Otherwise no.

What do we do with Jordan, Smith, Freeny and Wilson all of a sudden playing DE?
That is a good problem to have.

I'd say yes, bring him in on 3rd downs

Freeney? No this year we need a guy who can pull through in clutch times...we gonna need it.

Sacks are hard to come by. While not eye-popping totals, Will Smith is the best returning pass-rusher on the DL so I definitely wouldn't want to cut him. Relatively still "young" compared to Freeney and durable, too.
Will Smith 6.5 sacks
Junior Galette 4.5 sacks
Turk McBride 2.0 sacks
Martez Wilson 1.0 sack (as a part-time LB)
Sed Ellis 0.5 sack
Broderick Bunkley 0.0 sacks
But I do like adding Freeney even though he's suffered thru some injuries. He only played in 9 games, but he still had 8.5 sacks. And I agree I'd like to have him hopefully with a restructured contract as a sack specialist.

I still can't get over this.

He's a big name with prior year stats to back it up. Somebody is going to be spending Ferrari money, and they're going to end up with a Volvo.

Stats are nowhere near the entire story fwiw. Pressure makes QBs NFL QBs putrid. I know I link a lot of profootballfocus stuff, but this is really an interesting article that relates to sacks.

You don't want him. He's a 34 defensive end.
Posted on 7/20/12 at 6:08 am to Jcorye1
I feel like Spags could find a way to use him, probably by moving him inside or maybe even keeping him on the edge in certain packages.
Either way, he's been a very good player for SD for years, should be healthy after having a full year to recover from a broken leg, and could be a VERY cheap addition for depth seeing as how he was to make less than $1 mill this year.
I just want options for Spags on the DL. I really think he can make great things happen this year as long as he has the talent to put out there.

I'm for anybody who can kick a QB's arse. Don't care about his age, money, or anything else. If Brees had the Giants front 4, that dude wouldn't lose a game. If Freeney, dude from SD, or someone on the current roster can do it, then that's who we need.

Only if we can release Will Smith; he is being over paid for his production anyway!

Saints Nation: Saints Possibly Eyeing a Trade for Dwight Freeney?
Written by Andrew Juge | 19 July 2012
The latest rumor from a site that I have little trust in suggests the Colts may be looking to trade explosive defensive end Dwight Freeney, and the Saints are a possible landing spot. At first glance I kind of write off this article because "examiner.com" doesn't exactly sound like a place you want to go to get any kind of news. But the deal does make possible sense when you look at a number of factors:
1. The Saints are losing Will Smith for 4 games
2. They have weak depth at defensive end
3. Spagnuolo loves to create pressure with his front four, and that is Dwight Freeney's stock in trade.
4. Freeney's deal expires after this season, so he wouldn't count against the "cap hell" of 2013.
Ok, so now that I concede this trade could make sense, we've talked about the Saints' cap woes, so my next question was simple - can the Saints fit Freeney within the 2012 cap?
The Colts are starting anew and they've already blown up almost their entire roster. It's entirely conceivable they would trade him for a lowish draft choice (maybe a 5th rounder?). Freeney is in the final year of his contract, one that will pay him $14.305 million before he becomes a free agent in 2013. Based on his signing bonuses, then, he represents a ~$19 million cap hit. The Saints currently have $8 million in cap space, but will gain about $2 million in cap space from Will Smith being suspended 4 games and another ~$4 million from Vilma being suspended for the season. So the Saints could have as much as almost $15 million in cap room with those suspensions, but Freeney would still cost them $19 million. So they can't afford him. The bottom line - don't believe everything you read, Dwight Freeney is not coming to New Orleans. What they could do is wait till the Colts cut him, or till he becomes a free agent in 2013, and pursue him then. You also can't rule out a trade followed by a new 2 year contract that pays Freeney the same amount of money as a $14 million signing bonus (that he would get in one lump sum). Then they could pay him a "salary" of $1 million and he'd be an $8 million cap hit in 2012 which we work perfectly. The only problem with that scenario is he'd then be a higher cap hit in 2013, when the Saints are in much larger financial trouble. So again, not worth it. Let's just hope Galette and Martez Wilson can produce something similar to or better than Dwight Freeney at this stage of his career.

Gotta admit, I'm intrigued. Would love him if he can still pressure the QB. His one year contract may be a huge plus for us.
