a. You analyze these things in real time

b. How can trading an early 4th for an old WR work within a tank/rebuild philosophy?

There is no way to spin the Vele trade other than a win now move.

So the trade is OK if it's a mid-round 4th?

Based on what Vele has done so far, I'm not a fan of the trade either... but you're trying too hard. It was not unreasonable at the time. Not every move is going to work out, and this one won't set back the rebuild if it doesn't. This is not the decision to be so fixated on.

It would be hard to justify for almost all picks, considering his age.

Vele is not on a rebuild timeline.

It's like in your own quote.

"There is no way to spin the Vele trade other than a win now move".

Drafting a stud qb is a pipe dream.

Seems to happen sometimes for other teams.

Have to make a bet to win. I count 10-12 NFL franchises that have a QB they drafted that they're happy with. I like those odds. The Saints are allowed to have good things.

The odds are bad.

Sad thing is, I hear this more and more with this regimes draft picks and trades.

This team had no business trading that 4th with how bad the roster is. It was a retarded trade from the get go.

So that's it then? Saints are done cause they wasted a 4th?

At this point no one is claiming it was a good trade, but you got to let it go. It will not be the last move that doesn't work out. This is not the one that will kill us.

Stop being histrionic.

Over? No.

Less efficient? Yes

But the more responsive point is that if OP was correct, the 100% "win now" move of the Vele trade has no place, which implies OP is wrong.

Our front office and coaching staff thought we were going to compete this year

I seriously doubt this. I think they wanted to put more weapons in front of the young qbs so they could evaluate and not wonder if it’s just the supporting cast being dogshit

Trading a 4th for a receiver with 3 years left on his rookie deal is "100% win now"? And I'm being histrionic? The obsession you have with this trade is weird.

There were much cheaper ways to do this than to get an old, mid guy like Vele

Within the context of this thread, it's very relevant (again, completely refutes OP)

We have a horrible roster and have drafted poorly for the last several years. We need a few good drafts regardless of who’s coaching

Bump

6. If Shough doesn't win enough games to push our draft slot out of the top 7-8, then draft a QB. If he does (which probably means winning 4-5 games), build around Tyler. Most of the teams on the rest of our schedule are bad, 4-5 wins is very possible if Shough is good.

You're not drafting a first round quarterback regardless. You have too many other needs and why not give Tyler a whole season to figure out what he's got. At least that way, if you have to bring in a new quarterback, he's not coming into a team with a bear cupboard
