re: Sean Payton's salary and contract terms?

so in addition to draft pick compensation a la Gruden exactly what would it take for a coach in the NFL to go to a different franchise without being fired or released?
Payment of remaining term by the new team?
Yeah, that. The Bucs gave up 2 1st rounders and 2 2nd rounders plus cash compensation for a coach with one year left on his contract. Payton has four years left on his deal.
The scenario you're describing is so rare that it has only happened once in the modern NFL, and Payton would command a higher price than Gruden even though the terms for Gruden were astounding.
And, of course, this is all predicated on a willingness by both ownership (of both teams) and the head coach to do a deal like this.
So, in summation, there is an approximate chance of 0 that something like this happens.

Can't trade picks for a coach anymore after the Gruden deal. Basically, no chance for Dallas until his contract expires.

at the guy who said 8 million a year.
Yeah, that's too high. It's probably somewhere around 5 million, as his original contract was for about 3/year.

I would say even less than that. Somewhere in between 3 and 4 1/2.

Ad nauseum. Followed closely by the Patriots, Colts, and Eagles.

Take it from me . . . Payton is not going anywhere for awhile. I absolutely guarantee it. There are certain relationships within the organization here that he would not have in Dallas

Because in the NFL, coaches' contracts are pretty ironclad, unlike in college where they are essentially worthless. Therefore Jerry's inclination to hurl a dumptruck of money at a hot name is pretty moot, because there is no scenario in which Sean Payton takes over for Wade Phillips in Dallas.
Beyond that, Benson has never been cheap. He has often spent money very foolishly (or, more appropriately, his front office has), but he will pay top dollar when asked. He did extend Payton's contract following a season in which the team didn't make the playoffs, after all.

Look at the Bucs now after that deal.
Payton's connection in Dallas was Bill Parcells, if I remember correctly.
