I didn't realize he had been moved from DL to TE.

At any rate, he has now been moved out the door.

the Saints announced the release of tight end Mitchell Loewen.

Loewen signed with the Saints as an undrafted rookie in 2016, and other than an offseason stint with the Lions in 2019, has been with the Saints otherwise.

He was initially a defensive end, but made the switch to tight end. He played in one game last year for the Saints, and spent the rest of the year on the practice squad.

Sucks. He was the dude from Arkansas, right? Seems like he had a really nice pre-season a few years ago and showed a lot of raw talent. Like practice squad for a year, maybe active for a few games in season 2, but then contributing significantly by that 3rd year. Oh well, I think it speaks to our DL depth..

Trautman is going to make the #3 TE battle VERY boring. He already got 1 guy cut.

That's the one. I knew with our DL depth it was going to be hard for him to make the team, but I remember reading about this guy's athletic ability and was hoping he could develop into a player. I guess the position switch from DL to TE was the tip-off that the DL experiemtn wasn't working. Won't surpise me at all if he makes someone's roster this year.

No doubt. But he might make the #2 TE battle VERY interesting.

Na. I think everyone understands Hill’s role on the team.

I think the roles for the tight ends are pretty clear and set. Cook is your starter and will be mostly used off the line of scrimmage since he doesn’t block and is a mismatch. Hill is a utility guy that will be in there to block and backup the full back position. Trautman is the future of the position and will eventually play an in-line tight end that can block and will be a mismatch receiving threat. Can also line up off the line of scrimmage after cook is gone or if he is injured. That is your 3 tight ends and there roles are pretty clear.

I am guessing he will be given the TE suite at the hotel/apt closest to the facility.

The Saints are betting and praying that they can make Trout a strong blocker sooner than later.
As soon as that happens Hill is done.

Would bet we may not have seen the last of Loewen if he does not sign with another team. This may have just been a roster space move and he was told don't give up your lease.

Don’t bet on it. Josh Hill can play upback, runs a 4.6, can block, and is reliable in that 7-9yd range. His ability to play upback alone makes him coveted in 2TE sets.

Josh Hill played 146 more snaps than “TE1” Watson in 2018 and 147 more snaps than “TE1” Cook in 2019

People always say he’ll be gone then ya realize he’s one of the longest tenured saints at 7 seasons

I agree
People always want to kick hill out the door
He does multiple things well
He wouldn't be coming up on his 3rd contract if he wasn't valuable
He s a lifer

I agree Hill will be on this team as long as he wants. Cooks, Trautman, and Hill are as close to locks as you get for your 3 tight ends next year.

If Trautman is better Hill's chances to stick as a #3 TE take a hit as other TE's in camp may prove to be better recv options.

Hill will not stick forever and certainly not for long if he's not the best blocker in the group.

Hill will make the team easily and will be the number 2 tight end until Trautman is ready to play. Hill will still play and be rotated in even after Trautman is up to speed. Payton loves Hill and he will be on the team longer than Cook will be. Trautman will be a receiving threat that can block who will be a replacement for Cook not Hill. Cook doesn’t block. Hill can block, play full back, special teams, and is a decent enough receiver. He isn’t a tight end 1 but His versatility is exactly what you want in your 3rd tight end. He will be on the team until his play drops off.

Hill is our most reliable TE for many reasons.

I'm not kicking him to the curb.
