The New Orleans Saints will meet next week with one of the top tight ends available in the 2018 draft.

A group of Saints coaches, including Sean Payton, are scheduled to have a private visit in Columbia, S.C., with former South Carolina tight end Hayden Hurst, according to a source.

The 6-foot-4, 250-pound Hurst had 44 catches for 559 yards last season for the Gamecocks. Hurst is expected to go in the first two rounds of April's draft, and tight end is one of the Saints' top long-term needs.

Before playing at South Carolina, the 24-year-old Hurst tried to carve out a career in professional baseball in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization. He walked on with South Carolina's football team in the summer of 2015.

I’d take him in the third round.

I think there is a really good TE class with Gesicki, Geodert, Andrews, Hurst, and Fumagalli. Each has their flaws and strengths, but I think any of them can/will make an impact. So I think waiting till the 3rd maybe even trading up in the 3rd to get one of these guys is a good call, plus thats where we got Jimmy Graham..

the only thing I have against taking Hurst in the 1st is that he'll be 25 by the time his rookie season starts

This TE problem would be a lot easier to navigate if we had a second round pick. Oh well.

Granted, just saying that if we want to solve our TE problem through the draft we either have to reach in the 1st or cross our fingers and hope someone is there in the 3rd.

This makes no sense to me. I see this as only an advantage. You draft someone in their athletic prime, who is fully mature mentally and therefore more likely to contribute immediately. At the end of his contract he is still only 30 if he is drafted in the 1st. Is there a downside I am missing?

He’s too old.......won’t get the value of the pick unless it’s 3rd or lower.

I really like Hurst and Fumagalli. Gesicki also has outstanding tape, I watched the first 2 multiple times and can say they have what it takes. I feel like Hurst is the best blocker of the 3 though.

Lmao Kamara was the best draft steal I have seen in years.
