Saints to activate fullback John Kuhn from injured reserve: source

Finally took someone off, LOL
The New Orleans Saints have started thinking about their roster for the postseason.
The team plans to activate fullback John Kuhn from injured reserve on Wednesday, according to a source. The transaction would make him potentially available to contribute in the postseason.
By activating Kuhn, the Saints open a three-week practice window before they would have to add him to the active roster. He could play after two weeks of practice, so the soonest he could play is in the divisional round of the postseason.
But, even with the move Wednesday, there's no guarantee Kuhn will play again this season. Fullback Zach Line has handled the role well for the Saints, and it's unclear if the offense would have use for a second fullback.
The best explanation for the move is that Kuhn was the best option for the Saints' second return-from-injured-reserve designation, so the team decided to activate him to see if could contribute.

I guess it makes sense to do it if no one else on IR is eligible, but I find it weird with Line doing so well for us.

Plus, we've been so injury ridden at TE, he/Line could contribute in those roles as well. There's pretty much zero downside to it considering his experience.

I think with our injuries at TE we needed another able bodied blocker.
Remember, Hooman is concussed and I believe its the 2nd one this year. Hill is the only one that has much experience otherwise.
Because Line is actually the #2 rated FB in the league per PFF, weird othrwise.

I agree with all above about issues at the TE position. I am sure that is a huge reason.

It could be a scenario where they are just doing their due diligence. He can't play until the division round anyway. If Line gets hurt between now and then, then it was a great move. If not, you don't have to activate him. I don't think they lose anything with this because they don't have to make a roster spot for him immediately.

What exactly is Kleins injury? I thought it was just a groin pull?

last info I see on him is from the 19th:
Saints placed LB A.J. Klein (groin) on injured reserve, ending his season.
Klein hadn't played since injuring his groin in Week 14. The Saints signed TE John Phillips in the corresponding roster move. Klein struggled in his first year with New Orleans, earning PFF's second-worst grade among 4-3 outside linebackers.

Klein was definitely one of the reasons for defense success. I don’t understand the point saying he struggled this year.

Heard Klein was having a hernia addressed

He was good against the run and missing him as the signal caller is bigtime, but he's pretty terrible in coverage.

I like PFF and think it is as good of a standalone metric as any other but this is one of those instances where it misses the big picture. Klein was super valuable to our defense as our defensive QB, much like Vilma here before or like Keuchly to the Panthers, Derrick Johnson to the Chiefs, or Lee to the Cowboys. His value exceeds his physical ability.

I agree, but all of those guys you mentioned at 5x the athlete Klein is and excel(led) in other areas besides signal calling.

True. The problem is with guys like that, you don't recognize that type of value on teams you don't closely follow unless they're super standouts. I think Derrick Johnson is a good example because his physical skills have declined significantly but he maintains great value through his experience, intelligence, and leadership on the field.

That's a good point, and it would be hard to measure the intangibles like Klein's intelligence or ability to diagnose plays/formations/etc. He was very good at that.
After seeing how well Te'o played against the Falcons, I'm optimistic. I think he did a really good job of keeping the defense in position and getting guys lined up.

I wasn't suggesting I believe those PFF ratings

Extra blocking TE. Great move for playoffs. Makes the run game more lethal.
