Saints sign DT Nathan Shepherd

Former Jets DT Nathan Shepherd certainly fits the mold of that Wave 3 free agency class for the Saints. Plus a position of need at defensive tackle.

Seems like a great value pick up on day 3 of free agency. Glad we are beginning to address the DT position.

Per PFF he's good at pass rushing and bad at run defense.

68.9 Overall rating last year

Look at this draft profile

His physical traits and athletic ability will be considered moldable clay by NFL evaluators and coaches

Estimated 2nd Athleticism score for DTs in the 2018 draft

He also attended a small college in...Canda

Classic

Apparently he’s coming off his best year in run defense and racked up 17 pressures

Yeah looks like he's a guy who doesn't play a ton of snaps but can be productive in the pass rush. The Jets run a scheme that relies on 4 DL like us so he can probably contribute, at least on passing downs.

Another good pick up, I don't think we made much an upgrade at position. Saints didn't lose value either

We definitely have replaced Onyemata and Tuttle with players of at least equal caliber, if not better. Tuttle was a pleasant surprise considering he was a UDF, but he wasn't close to being in impact player. Onyemata took a step back after he got busted for PEDs and has never risen above the level of mediocre. Our run D was soft in the middle last year, and we haven't gotten much push up the middle on passing plays for years. I think Saunders and Shepherd will turn out to be a slight upgrade, and if Saunders can stay healthy he might actually end up being a significant addition. I think the team may use its 1st rounder on a 3 tech DT, so I don't think we are done upgrading at this position.

No shite. And there’s zero to indicate we won’t. We got younger and significantly cheaper and maybe upgraded immediately, but certainly these guys will be better 3 years from now that Onyemata and Tuttle. These are fantastic value signings for rotational pieces. Still need to add a bigger name in FA and the draft, but we’ll likely have upgraded the position while getting extremely younger and better value.

There’s no legit criticism of these moves at this time. Have to start somewhere. Now, if we don’t sign anyone else or draft one early, then we can talk. But any current criticism is ridiculous and reeks of trying to desperately hold on to an “I told you so” agenda.

Saints new DT Nathan Shepherd finished 36/127 for DT’s according to @PFF with a 9/92 finish as a pass rusher. Good patient signing for a rotational DT. Saints playing it right this off season

Since Week 5, Jets DI Nathan Shepherd is 1st in pass rush win rate among interior defenders (26.8%) and second in pressure percentage (17.1%)

Pretty solid measurables

You can see him winning damn near every pass rush vs the rams and center brian allen.

It's a solid signing. I'm still worried about the d line as a whole.
Hopefully more to come.
