Saints release veteran wide receiver James Washington

This is a tough break for James Washington: the New Orleans Saints released the veteran wide receiver on Tuesday, per the daily NFL transactions wire. Washington had fallen behind players like Keith Kirkwood and A.T. Perry at training camp, and it didn’t help his case that both receivers caught touchdown passes in the first preseason game while a miscommunication with rookie quarterback Jake Haener led to an interception when the ball was thrown Washington’s way.
Washington, 27, should land on a roster somewhere around the league. After starting his NFL career with the Pittsburgh Steelers, he played well with the Dallas Cowboys last summer until suffering an injury that derailed his season. Now healthy, he’ll be looking to catch on with another team and make his case for a roster spot in the remaining two weeks of preseason games.
The Saints had to release someone in a corresponding move to the signing of running back Darrel Williams, which was also confirmed on Tuesday’s update to the NFL transactions wire. His departure leaves the following players competing for five or six roster spots at wide receiver:
No. 13 Michael Thomas
No. 12 Chris Olave
No. 22 Rashid Shaheed
No. 10 Tre’Quan Smith
No. 18 Keith Kirkwood
No. 17 A.T. Perry
No. 11 Bryan Edwards
No. 84 Lynn Bowden
No. 88 Shaquan Davis

Legit feel bad for Jontre after what he said it meant to him and his dad to sign here. He's got zero shot of beating out Tre'Quan or Kirkwood unless he goes absolutely nuts in the last two preseason games

The New Orleans Saints are releasing veteran WR James Washington on Tuesday. The move was first reported by ESPN reporter Field Yates. New Orleans needed to create room on their 90-man training camp roster after officially signing RB Darrel Williams.
Washington, 27, was signed by the Saints this spring as a free agent. Originally a second-round choice in the 2018 NFL Draft out of Oklahoma State by the Pittsburgh Steelers, Washington had 114 receptions for 1,629 yards and 11 touchdowns over five NFL seasons. He played his first four years with the Steelers before appearing in two contests with the Dallas Cowboys in 2022.
Washington was part of a logjam of competition at wide receiver for New Orleans this summer. According to Ross Jackson of the Saints News Network:
"Washington impressed early on in camp practices, but kind of trickled off throughout. His preseason performance against Kansas City didn’t help him out much in his battle to make the squad."
Washington appeared in 26 of the Saints offensive snaps against Kansas City and caught no passes. John Hendrix of the Saints News Network tweeted this in response to Washington's release:
"Thought James Washington was a little ahead of someone like Bryan Edwards, but Edwards had a really good week of practice last week. A.T. Perry, Keith Kirkwood stock on the rise too."
Chris Olave, Michael Thomas, and Rashid Shaheed are expected to be the top three receivers for New Orleans. Perry, a rookie sixth-round pick, had an outstanding outing against the Chiefs. Kirkwood has also come on strong lately.
Other wideouts that are competing for roster spots are Bryan Edwards, Lynn Bowden Jr., Tre'Quan Smith, Kawaan Baker, Jontre Kirklin, and Shaq Davis. The Saints play their second preseason game against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday. That will follow two days of scrimmages between the teams.

Carr so far has really singled out Kirkwood in the group trying to be 4-6.
Nice battle going on.

You know some vet receivers could start the season on the PuP and on the 4 week IR to allow us to start a bunch of young wideouts. Jus sayin.

Smith continues to defy logic because he can block and is a vet in the offense. An oft injured, non receiving reciever. Gotta love it.

Johnson, Moreau, Graham and Hill (not really a TE, more specialist) will all make it.
That may mean Trequan gets cut, I haven't ran the numbers. Graham will for sure make it though.

If Kirklin makes the team, it will be as a PS special teams guy. All the athleticism is there, but it’s unrealistic to think he’s going to get a shot at WR. Special teams/returner is possible one day.
