Don’t know where it came from, but at one point there was a rumor that he gave himself that nickname when he was at BC. Something about him someone saying he had ice in his veins, and he said “that’s why I’m Matty Ice”
After the SB, and now today, I really want that rumor to be true

Remember that 1980 game in San Francisco. Saints leading 49ers at half 35-7 and go scoreless in second half and lose 38-35 in overtime.
