Shockey was a more than adequate blocking TE

I'd say Shockey was one of the best blocking TE's as of recent, especially when healthy. he is a very smart player.

You would think losing him this off season is definitely a good enough reason why we would add another TE who can block. My only argument is that Payton was the pioneer of moving the Tackle to the TE position for extra blocking. So its very unlikely that you will see the Saints brass pay another player to come in and be a blocking TE. If that were the case they should of offered Shockey another deal to keep him here in Nola.

of course not. but it would be smart to resign our 6ft 7in Tackle to a modest contract who understands Paytons offense, can fill in at spot duty and as a backup at both RT, LT, and as an extra blocking TE.

This has been going on in the league for years. Some people use LBs, some use DTs....its not unprecedented.

We'll go ahead and just stop the quote there.

Couldn't Charles Brown EASILY fill the role voided by Strief? Slender LT on the bench who can lineup on the line and do some blocking.

Yeah, but they need more than one backup.

We're are fairly thin at OT now that you look at, especially considering Bushrod and Strief aren't signed long term.

Being that they didn't draft any OLinemen makes me think they are planning on resigning both.

Even if they did, we still need to add more than that for camp what if situations. Can you copy the OT's we have on roster right now?

Bushrod is rated the 23rd offensive tackle.................... IN FREE AGENCY! Strief 31

We need look at FA upgrades IMO.

IF JB is healthy, he is a legitimate upgrade to Bushrod still IMO. But may want too much money though. A guy like Locklear could be intriguing.

No, they want Brown to be a starter, so I'd say Bushrod could easily fill the roll voided by Strief

If Charles becomes the quality starter that they think he can be... then I'd say having the 23rd and 31st ranked Tackles as our backups is pretty good IMO.

I hope Charles is able to beef up and solidify the LOT spot. It's like we have NO info about his development and progress.

right.

so you're saying we should sign some new free agent Tackle thats ranked in the 20 somethings of free agency to replace the one's that have been here and have helped us win?(championships)

or are you saying spend money on another low ranked free agent tackle that is gonna be behind the backups we already have? just to add more depth to a position that is already solid?

yeah i know right. but based on how he was graded coming out of college I think he has all the tools to be a starting LT. fingers crossed.

I was gonna ask why we get no news on this guy. All the hype about him and he turns into casper the friendly ghost. Blues can't even find any copy/paste material.

In regards to the TE situation, I agree that we could add one more strictly for depth. But, Jimmy Graham will be more than capable to do anything we need out of the TE spot.

I sat next to him on a plane from Miami. He was heading to NO for the workouts Drew has put together. I asked him a few things about the lockout, the workouts, and what he feels about his game.

He said "you don't have to worry about me, I'm not going to dissapoint". He is determined to be the best TE and also said that Shockey was the best mentor he could have ever asked for. He said he will really miss him.

I love steve's two back to back sentences here...

Whats hard to understand? I think the Saints could use a quality traditional TE as a backup. Not a blocking type like a Dinkins or a receiving type like Thomas and Graham.

Someone with Shockey's (at his advanced age) skill set. A guy who can make a play over the middle but also do a decent job pass protecting and run blocking.

My whole point was that if we do go after a TE then it should not be a Dinkins "blocking" type TE.

Chad thinks we need an upgrade at Strief's role. I'm saying we do NOT. If Payton wanted to upgrade that position then he would have done it the past TWO offseasons.
