LINK
The Saints held their first day of minicamp on Tuesday in Metairie.
Here are a few observations from minicamp, which continues on Wednesday and conludes on Thursday.
Attendance
Drew Brees was the most notable absent player from practice.
Brees, who also missed the final day of OTAs last week, is in San Diego attending to a legal matter pertaining to a lawsuit filed against a jeweler.
Teddy Bridgewater worked with the first-team offense.
Bridgewater completed 5 of 10 for 67 yards in a 2-minute drill against the first team defense.
Other players who didn't participate in practice were: Keith Kirkwood, Chris Banjo, Larry Warford, Cameron Meredith, and Sheldon Rankins.
Kirkwood and Meredith were at practice, but didn't participate. Warford was seen at the facility as well.
Transactions
The Saints waived David Simmons, a rookie defensive back who played collegiately at North Park University.
The Saints signed cornerback Kayvon Webster and receiver Chad Hansen.
Webster was a third-round pick of the Denver Broncos in 2013 and was a member of their Super Bowl 50 championship team.
He signed with the Los Angeles Rams and started 11 games before rupturing his Achilles tendon. He played for the Houston Texans during the 2018 season, but finished the season on injured reserve after multiple leg injuries.
Tryout players
Tristan Blewett, a rugby player with the New Orleans Gold, was one of the tryout players at Saints practice on Tuesday. Other tryout players at practice included: receivers Dylan Collie, Rishard Matthews and Micah Wright, offensive lineman Daniel Cooney and kicker Alex Kjellsten. Matthews, who entered the league in 2012, has played with the Dolphins, Titans and Jets. Kjellsten played at McNeese State and was here during rookie camp.
Who's up front?
Veteran Marshall Newhouse took some reps at left tackle with the first team offense. He was joined on the front line by left guard Andrus Peat, center Erik McCoy, right guard Nock Easton and right tackle Ryan Ramczyk.
Standing out
Rookie tight end Alize Mack had a good day, showing off his hands with a couple nice catches in traffic.
The Saints drafted Mack in the seventh round out of Notre Dame.
"He's doing well," Sean Payton said. "He'll take a couple of good steps forward. He made some plays today and then all of a sudden he'll have a few mistakes. Like a lot of these rookies, it's a transition, a big (learning) curve for him. He made some plays earlier in practice. He can run well. I think the detail, play to play, relative to what he's doing is something he's working on now.”

I copied these tweets from Saints Report...
Rishard Matthews is trying out for the Saints today
Speaking of, Rishard Matthews just made a nice backshoulder catch against Chauncey Gardner-Johnson
Ken Crawley just had a nice PBU against Ted Ginn Jr. in one on one’s
Great play Chauncey Gardner to break up a pass on throw to Humphrey.
Cyril Grayson just completely twisted a DB on an out an up route.
Simmie Cobbs taking advantage of first-team reps. Teddy hits a streaking Cobbs on the first play of team. Payton mentions Cobbs regularly when discussing the WR race.
Meanwhile, no Drew Brees at Saints practice again Tuesday as he continues testimony in his lawsuit against a San Diego jeweler that he claims defrauded him.
Correction/update. Cam Meredith is here. Just not participating
Also not spotted for anyone keeping track at home: Chris Banjo, Larry Warford, Sheldon Rankins
No Keith Kirkwood either
Eli Apple PbU during 7 on 7 on throw from Bridgewater to Cobbs. Those connected on a seam route during team for a big gain
Barrett to Grayson skinny post TD during 7 on 7
Marshall Newhouse, Andrus Peat, Erik McCoy, Nick Easton, Ryan Ramczyk as your starting O-Line today
McCoy getting work at center with the starters. @Saints have a deep rotation going
Rishard Matthews just had a nice TD grab in drills
Hill to Matthews TD. Taysom’s having a nice day throwing the ball.
A couple intriguing tryout players here at Saints minicamp this week: veteran WR Rishard Matthews and NOLA Gold rugby player Tristan Blewett. Blewett, who is from South Africa, is auditioning for the Saints at defensive back and special teams.
Erik McCoy is becoming a staple with the ones at center the past open practices. Nick Easton staying at guard with Warford still out. Cameron Tom with the twos at center.
Tristan Blewett of the NOLA Gold getting a rep at punt returner... was doing DB drills earlier in practice
Back to back catches for Jared cook from Bridgewater during team
Onyemata sack on Bridgewater. Davenport got pressure as well
Jared Cook’s nice, high all-hands snatch over Gardner-Johnson is a good look. Huuuuuuuuge catch radius for Cook
Back-to-back completions from Teddy Bridgewater to Jared Cook to start latest round of full-Team drills. Then he missed Michael Thomas deep while under pressure.
Crawley flagged for DPI although it’s possible Taysom was sacked on the play
Taysom Hill has made some nice throws today. Just hit Dan Arnold on a seam route for a big play
Thomas Morstead just had a punt hang for 5.1 seconds
I feel fairly strongly that the pass rush was the strength of Tuesday’s Saints minicamp practice — though they’re not in pads and not allowed to hit the QB, so we don’t have any “sack” or QB hit totals to go by. The D won both of the 2-minute drills at the end of practice though.

quote:Interesting signing. Hansen was a 4th round pick in the 2017 draft. He's only 24. Good size (6'2-202) and adequate speed (4.53) 1st team All PAC-12 his senior year. I don't remember there being any issue with his hands when he came out in the draft so I'm not sure why he hasn't been able to stick with a team.
The Saints signed receiver Chad Hansen.

Tweets from day 2...
Drew Brees back on the Saints’ practice field after wrapping up his testimony in San Diego on Tuesday. He missed one day of minicamp and one OTA last week.
Terron Armstead is getting some rest today, so Marshall Newhouse is the Saints’ top left tackle.
Brees 3/4 in team period. Hit cook on slant, Kamara in flat, hill on the seam with Davis in great coverage
Perfect offense beats almost-perfect D, @drewbrees with the bucket-drop pass to TE Josh Hill, in stride, just over LB Demario Davis and right in front of another defender
Bridgewater 4/4 during team. Ginn slant, Smith on short curl, Carr out , Arnold on deep curl
Jared Cook seems to catch the first pass in almost every set of team drills. Hard not to get excited about his prospects in Saints’ offense. ... Brees was way short on his first deep attempt, then placed a downfield throw perfectly to Hill (who made a great catch).
Taysom 2/4. Inc Collie drop on slant, dayes option route, inc, Wright on corner route
Marshon Lattimore comes up with the INT off Drew Brees trying to hit Jarred Cook
A brutal offensive series by the Saints first-team offense just ended after two fumbled QB-center exchanges, a dropped pass by Latavius Murray and a pick by Marshon Lattimore.
So far this spring, P.J. Williams has worked consistently as the Saints’ starting nickel back, while Patrick Robinson has run with the 2s. Looks like a strong competition there after Williams played so well in that position last year.
Sherels PBU on deep route to Matthews from Taysom Hill
Offense won the first team period. Defense won the second
Good sign from Rishard Matthews. Here on a tryout. Took a snap with the ones in team. Brees hit him deep. He’s looked good these two days.
Brees 2/4 during drill. Murray on a check down then connected with Risard Matthews on a deep ball. Vonn Bell had a PBU on cook during drill
Bridgewater 3/4... hits Emmanuel Butler down the sideline ... Carr on a curl and 30 on screen.. PRob picked him off on his last rep.
Nice catch down the field by Saints undrafted rookie WR Emmanuel Butler from Northern Arizona. I heard he’s been impressing in camp.
Patrick Robinson picks off Teddy in team drills.
Hill went 2/3.. misfired on an out to Matthews... then hit Garrett griffin on screen and Allen in the flat
Brees went 3/4 in the no huddle drill... capped off with a TD strike to Ginn on a 9 route with :04 left. Drill started with :49 left with about 60 yards to score.
Not surprised to see #Saints rookie OL Erik McCoy getting so many early looks. The depth/versatility of the OL has been a strength for them during the past two season, and will be interesting to see how many of these 1st team reps continue into camp/preseason.
That’s it for Saints practice today. One more scheduled for tomorrow before they break until training camp.

Hopefully with all these receivers we start to see some standouts
