Saints History: The Disastrous Colts Trade that Let the Saints Draft Pat Swilling

There's a reason you don't consummate a draft trade to move up and draft 1 particular player in mind until the team you've agreed to trade with is actually on the clock.
Take the lesson of the Indianapolis Colts during the 1986 draft
The Colts had the 6th pick in the 1986 draft... and owner Jim Irsay let it be known the team was going after a QB.
Feeling like their QB target... Purdue QB Jim Everett... wouldn't be around at #6... the Colts called up the team drafting 4th overall... the New Orleans Saints
2 WEEKS BEFORE THE DRAFT... the trade was consummated... the Colts would move up to #4... the Saints fell back to #6 and got the Colts 3rd round pick
So comes draft day... and everything's looking good for the Colts
The Bucs took Bo Jackson (who pulled an Eli Manning before Eli Manning was a thing... Bo knows not to play for Tampa)
The Falcons took DE Tony Casillas from Oklahoma
But then came the moment where Irsay's previous bloviating about the pick came back to bite the Colts in the butt
The Houston Oilers called the Colts and said "so you want Jim Everett, huh? Well you better trade up with us or we're taking him."
The Colts called the Oilers bluff... mostly because the coaching staff was already upset about trading a pick to the Saints as the coaches and team management were not on the same page about the move... and the Oilers did what they promised... drafting Everett even though Warren Moon was already set as the Oilers QB.
The Colts ended up taking a DE from Alabama at #4... who had a successful but not great NFL career... and they took a QB in the 2nd round who stunk to high Heaven... Everett never played a down in Houston before being traded to the LA Rams...
and that 3rd round pick the Colts coaches didn't want to give up but management traded to the Saints anyway and didn't even get the player they wanted by doing so... became vaunted Dome Patrol member Pat Swilling
also... the person they drafted at #6 after trading back with Colts... Jim Dombrowski

I met Dombrowski when he was with the Saints. Met him in a Lounge on the Northshore while he was doing P.R. for one of the Beer Distributors might have been Champagne Beverages. Anyway I digress. He was a big ol' boy. Very personable.

Unless you are old & were around then or a historian of the game then many don't that Bo Jackson was drafted by the Bucs. Steve Young too. Or that John Elway was drafted by the Colts but had announced he would refuse to play for them in the months leading up to the draft which ultimately forced the Colts to trade him to the Broncos. Steve Young, Jim Kelly & Reggie White all originally played in the USFL first before the NFL.
The interesting part about Elway is that Al Davis wanted to trade up to get him but Commissioner Pete Rozelle flexed his power to stop the trade due to his personal conflict with Davis.
Also, another interesting fact about the 1983 NFL Draft is that prior to the 1982 college football season, the debate was who would go #1, John Elway or Dan Marino. Those two were easily the best QB prospects in the draft. Marino was highly rated but Elway was viewed as the once in a lifetime type prospect. It was figured both would go #1 & #2. Then came rumors about Marino & potential cocaine usage during his playing days at Pitt. Elway goes #1 & Marino falls all the way to #27 in the 1983 NFL Draft.

I wonder how many players were drafted in 2 different drafts like Bo, tho. It can't be that many.
Edit: Looked it up. Only 2 players were taken in 2 different drafts.
Bo Jackson drafted by Tampa in 1986 and then by the LA Raiders in 1987
and
Craig Erickson drafted by the Eagles in 1991 and then by Tampa in 1992.
Funny that the Bucs were involved both times.

Bo was pissed because Tampa said he could come visit and he wouldn’t violate any NCAA rules.
Bo went on the visit - he was ruled ineligible and couldn’t play baseball.
So he told them not to draft him he was pissed.
They did anyway and he said I’m not going.
Good for Bo
