Likely just needed a DE to rotate when Hicks slides to NT on occasion.

or maybe the fact we only have 3 olb's on the roster had some importance too.

Payton says he see Richardson as an olb more than a DE, but I think that's a smoke screen son.

I have no stats from PFF of Richardson as a DE.

He was a DE in OTAs and early in camp before injuries to Butler, Galette, and Wilson. After that they moved both him and Atkins to OLB.

He'll play the same role as Galette and a hybrid OLB/DE.

Strictly as a pass rushing LB. Hopefully they won't make him cover like they had Will Smith in the preseason.

That was preseason. Smith was not going to cover more than 2-3 times in real games. Hell both Galette and Haralson only had 1 coverage snap a piece.

poor Tanner. Finally make the roster, get to hang around for 1 game and then get cut.

Tanner has done everything imaginable to earn a spot on this team. I can't really see how Meachem is an upgrade unless they really like what they've seen in the weightroom and practice.

If Meachem is close to as good as he was when he left he is way ahead of Tanner talent wise.

Tanner has nice routes and can catch, but he isn't blowing of doors and doesn't have good size.

He's a poor man's Lance Moore.

I see Tanner as a very known quantity and meech not so much as of late.
Three of the biggest surprises to me so far is...
1.Hill TE making the team as a rookie (not talked about at all)
2.Kenny Stills
3.Meech being back on the team

I like the addition, but I don't want Hicks at NT. He is best fit for DE. This guy will beast for us this year.

You can't look at what happened in SD with Meach. He is a super known quantity here and if he didn't have it any more it would be him and not Tanner getting walking papers.

As for the other two, I was also shocked that Hill made it after not being talked about by anyone(I don't even think coaches talked about him). This lead me to assume Higgins was still in the lead for the 3rd TE spot(he did make it to the PS however).

But I think where he won the spot is special teams as he played a lot of snaps there and did well from what I saw. With Graham and Watson we can afford to have a run blocking/special teams TE without worrying about how good of a receiver he is.

As for Stills, I was jacked when we got him in the 5th. I knew right away it was a steal and that he could possibly be great. I did not think he would be this good this soon though.

Not really. Tanner has been persistent but he is extremely limited physically. Meachem is significantly more athletic and has had success in his role with us in the past. We need someone to stretch the field. In no way, shape, or form does tanner do that.

It's rare that you see a player as untalented as tanner that so many fans feel is entitled to a spot on the team. Rudy stories are nice for movies.... Not so much when you're trying to win championships. If tanner was anything more than a bubble player he'd have been picked up by a lesser talented offense multiple times over.

I feel for Tanner, but he has 24 hours to clear waivers and can be stashed on the practice squad. Either way, he may have a gig after all. There are some receiver strapped teams in the NFL, right Tom Brady?

I think the telling thing will be if he gets added to the practice squad. Do they cut Hakim or Kelemete? Not sure they would cut anyone else.

Hakim has more upside once he learns how to consistently catch the ball so it would be hard to cut him.

Is Tanner still eligible for the PS? I thought you can only be on it for 2-3 years, and I feel like he's been on it for at least 3 already.
