The last time I got excited for a CFL stud, I was left wanting.

Meh. It's just a depth signing, not the type of thing to get too excited about. The only FS we have on the roster is Byrd. Depth is needed.

Good signing. Cheap, high-potential depth.

This guy is not just some small school find who ended up in Canada.

He was set to be a Florida State starting linebacker before this:

The path to athletic stardom is a sinewy one, and sometimes people fall off it.

Take the case of Toronto Argonauts linebacker Marcus Ball.

But in 2008, just as he was about to feature as a starting linebacker for celebrated coach Bobby Bowden, Ball became one of 61 athletes at the university to get caught up in an academic fraud scandal (the violations ranged from having tutors take tests to gaining access to exam questions).

He gave up his scholarship, quit the team and headed to tiny Pearl River Community college for a season before transferring to the University of Memphis, a Division One minnow.

In the CFL, he is considered a "linebacker" but there are 12 guys on the field and tons of passing. He is an NFL strong safety.

From what I understand, he played LB at FSU but moved to safety for his CC and Memphis. Memphis has him listed as a "DB" on his player profile.

I'm not sure what he played in Canada.
