What's wrong? You don't want a 30 year old QB making his first NFL start?

Did you read the threads on here about drafting a QB?

It's not like they've rolled first and second round pikcs thru here. They are mostly late rounders or UDFA. There's a reason for that. Maybe they just aren't very good? Can't coach everyone to play at an NFL level

I'm rooting for Griffin, but ultimately he will be holding the clipboard his entire career.

probably so. No reason to invest in a starter role, but Sean Payton and Loomis talk about Griffin differently than other backups
2nd video in this link
quote:
"Mike Neu was talking about Ryan Griffin and felt he had a lot of the tools to play in the NFL. He was just disappointed he didn't get to coach him longer," Loomis said. "Ryan comes to us after we signed him as a free agent. He had the advantage of being in the familiar offense, but it's much more than that. He's a talented player who got the chance to be successful. We like what we saw, and we have high expectations for him."
quote:
"I think No. 1, he's got arm strength, size, he's very smart," Payton said of Griffin, who measured 6 feet, 4 inches and 221 pounds at Tulane's Pro Day last month. "If this player was on the East Coast, we would have seen the workouts and evaluated him the same. But then you get to see him here (at two local workouts) and you have the connection with the coaching staff (Johnson, the longtime former Saints receivers coach, and Tulane quarterbacks coach Mike Neu, a former Saints scout). ...
He's had a great offseason too, despite what the OP thinks:

quote:
METAIRIE, La. – Second-year quarterback Ryan Griffin earned some attention for how well he performed during the New Orleans Saints’ minicamp practice on Tuesday.
He was even better on Wednesday.
Griffin stood out more than anyone else to me during Wednesday’s session while working with the second team as he continues his open competition with veteran Luke McCown. The highlight was a deep completion to receiver Marques Colston in full-team drills. But Griffin was sharp throughout the day, except for one late interception to cornerback Terrence Frederick.
Stills shines: If Griffin wasn’t the player of the day on Wednesday, it was second-year receiver Kenny Stills. He made a great effort to come back for a diving catch after Drew Brees chucked one to him from all the way across the field on the run in full-team drills. Stills also made a nifty one-handed catch in earlier passing drills, among other nice catches.

Am I reading correctly that Griffin is now the front runner to win the #2 Qb job? Looks like the OP may have jumped the gun.

Griffin apparently was very impressive in the B&G scrimmage. Heard a couple of commentators say he may have moved ahead.

just like half this board will be calling for rob ryans head if the falcons take the opening drive down for a field goal .....

I'd say Griffin has basically all the tangibles. Not sure of the intangibles, but I do remember he looked good last preseason; strong arm, nice touch, pretty decisive on his reads. I thought he graded out to about a 3rd or 4th rd (was equal with Glennon on a lot of people's boards), but fell to us.
He seems like a sharp kid, let Payton see what he can do with him.

IO thought I deserved this, but then I read the OP. WTF??? I just asked if it was time to think about RG not really being the #2 guy. What have the rest of you seen that makes you now think he is somehow great?
It's not like I said cut him outright? I just wondered aloud if he was/not going to pan out?
This is worse than when everyone thought Ray Zellars was somehow good because Ditka said he was in love with him...

Nobody thinks he's great, he's competing for the backup QB job.

anyone thinking that the Saints haven't been able to really develop these guys
How many teams have legit starting QB's in this league?
How many teams have two legit starting QB's in this league?
Point is its hard/lucky to have one stud QB. And its even harder to "develop" two at the same time.
We have decent back-ups. You'll just have to be happy with being like 95% of the other teams in that regard.
