Plan for 2023 QB

Jameis Winston will be gone. You can release him before June 1 and save $4.4MM. You can release him after June 1 and save $12.8MM, but carry a $8.4MM cap hit in 2024. Just bite the bullet as I’m sure Winston doesn’t want to be here anyway.
Andy Dalton is a free agent.
As we all know, we don’t have a first round pick as of right now. That can change based off of trades and a deal for Payton, but we’ll operate in this space for now. This QB class stinks on paper right now. If you REALLY like a QB in round 2 then draft him but nobody really excited me, but you also need to take as many bites at the apple when it comes to QB. If you’re dead set on drafting a QB early, I’d bring back Dalton and let that play out.
There are also some interesting, youngish free agents that I believe are worth exploring;
Mike White age 27
Cooper Rush 29
Gardner Minshew 26
Tyler Huntley 25
None of these guys are likely to be long term fixes obviously, BUT, none should be very expensive and paired with a rookie in 2023 or 24, you can start seeing a plan.

Trade a 6th for tanking expert Davis Mills and pray to god we go like 3-14 so we can get the first overall pick

I think mills is ok, and he'd be my choice. He's on a horrible team.

Heineke is a free agent at age 30 as well but i don’t think Washington lets him leave so I didn’t include him.
You could argue the Jets don’t let Mike White leave also though

Mills is under a cheap contract until 2024. I figure they’ll keep him around even if they draft a QB this year.

Andy Dalton is too good to be here.
I want trash. I want to lose every fricking game next year. 0-17.

I know most will cringe, but Mayfield if he comes cheap may be a good fit for what some want. Bridge QB, but he may win too many games to get the 0-17 dream.

We don’t want to risk Mayfield playing the overall #1. Better to extend Dalton or bring in trash so we don’t mess up the plan.

Im really wondering if the 49ers pick him up today (Baker).

If we sign Gardner, he'll win us just enough games to miss on Caleb Williams.
