Most LTs taken in first round who end up being good to great are pretty solid to great their rookie year. Go find me an OT taken in first round who had a horrible start like this and/or bad rookie year and became an all pro to great OT? I know Penning is in his second year but technically due to injury its his rookie year.

Well, this is his rookie year since he missed almost all of last season

IM not sure what people's expectations were for him but he's a small school project player who hasnt played in a year.
Can we be a little patient with him?

Everyone seems to forget how horrible Terron Armstead looked his first few starts at LT. He was also a raw athletically gifted LT. Give him a little more time. If it’s still this bad by week 10 I’ll be concerned

My point being if you have to be this patient with an OT from a small school why draft the guy 19th overall in the first round? Especially when you have a win now team to begin with. I hope he develops and becomes great but you have to question why waste a first round pick on a guy whos a long term project?

Armstead again was a third round pick. This is my issue, you dont draft OT project from a small school 19th overall. Again hope he develops but you have to question where he was drafted.

Penning wasn't gonna be there in the 3rd though

Then don’t draft him. I just dont think he’s worth a first rounder then. Again most OTs drafted in first round who end up being good to great are pro ready they arent projects.

I assume there are a lot of examples of OTs that take some time to develop. Not sure about first rounders, but just from recent saints history:
Zach Streif was eligible for like 5 years before becoming a solid starter.
Jermone Bushrod looked rough his first couple of spot starts
Jamal Brown needed a year at RT before he could play on the left.
Penning just played his second career start and had a rough, rough first half. His second half was better. He will need help this year but saints have no other choice but to ride through his growing pains and hope he goes the way of bushrod and not Charles Brown.

Strief and Bushrod were late round picks. Brown played RT and had a great rookie season there. I hope you’re right, I just think it was a mistake to draft a small school tackle in the first round. Not the end of the world but also something to note for them when drafting lineman from small schools.

I will say this - Penning is so, so important to this team. For some many reasons, and both for this year and going forward, we will really be set back if he is a bust.
Other than good health, based on what I saw yesterday Penning really might be the unknown that guy swings our season depending on how he shakes out.

This panic is based off the first ~30 snaps of this guy’s career

I agree with you on that. I hope for the Saints sake he pans out.

whos a long term project?
You make your post more accurate by inserting "long term project" that not one person in or out of the league has said but you.
Willie Roaf La Tech
Jackie Slater Jackson st
Eric fisher central Michigan
Ray Wright Ft Valley St.
Three of these four are in the HoF
Did every team make the right decision to pass them up in the draft? Seems to me, correct me if I'm wrong, draft position or undrafted doesn't determine the skill of a player. Brock Perdy was the last pick etc etc.
Posted on 9/11/23 at 12:48 pm to goatmilker
Please tell me when Roaf, Slater, and Wright were drafted? Im excluded Fisher because he honestly wasnt that successful. Also did all 3 of those guys struggle like Penning did his first game- to that degree? Plus Willie and Eric played at a FBS level. So now we’re going down to Slater and Wright since those are FCS schools. When you are drafted at your position its partly because of your skill? So you’re telling me when they drafted Penning his skill didn’t matter? Not sure what your point is here.
