Ryker Mathews, from CBS
Sounds like a poor man's Zach Strief
Sounds like a poor man's Zach Strief
quote:
STRENGTHS WEAKNESSES
STRENGTHS: Mathews is a naturally large man with good overall weight distribution and a thick trunk well suited to the battle at the line of scrimmage. He isn't a flashy athlete but shows functional quickness and agility to mirror defenders in pass protection, using short, powerful steps to help him maintain balance.
Mathews' best attribute is the vice-like grip he uses when latching onto defenders. Once he locks on, he's generally able to control opponents, keeping his hands inside the defenders' chest plate and shuffling laterally to remain square. Showing the awareness and technique you'd expect of a four-year starter with experience playing all over the line, Mathews incorporates angles into his blocking, turning and sealing defenders off in the running game.
He offers position versatility, having played all four exterior positions (and even blocking tight end) as a senior.
WEAKNESSES: Mathews, frankly, is a better football player than athlete. He isn't particularly quick off the snap, catching opponents as they come to him rather than initiating contact. He's a bit heavy-legged, lacking the foot speed to remain at left tackle in the NFL and struggles redirecting on the move in the running game.
He has a tendency to stand up at the snap, too often bending at the waist rather than at the knees, which could lead to struggles against the more powerful defensive tackles he's likely to face if moved inside in the NFL.
IN OUR VIEW: While he isn't the caliber of athlete who will earn a high pick, Mathews is powerful, tough and experienced at multiple positions in a pro-style offense, making him a solid "sixth man" candidate along the offensive line likely to still be on the board on Day Three.

Dangerfield, from NFL.com
quote:
OVERVIEW
Dangerfield is proud of his football accomplishments, but even more proud of his late father, who was among the first responders at the World Trade Center on 9/11. David Dangerfield passed away from a heart attack in 2009, but would be equally proud of his son for his efforts on the gridiron. It didn't take long for the younger Dangerfield (6-3, 200) to adjust to the Hilltoppers' offense as a transfer from Fort Scott Community College; he was voted second-team All-Conference USA after grabbing 69 passes for 825 yards and 11 touchdowns. Dangerfield was a crucial part of the HIlltoppers' potent offense in 2015, as well, garnering honorable mention C-USA honors with 82 catches for 844 yards and eight scores.
ANALYSIS
STRENGTHS Big and physical inside his routes. Uses a well placed push to free himself from grabby cornerbacks. Muscular legs allow him to drag tacklers for extra yardage after the catch. Decent footwork to free himself against press coverage. Can adjust to throws behind him and stretch and catch throws out in front. Has the size and aggressiveness to be effective blocker in run game. Consistent red-zone production for consecutive years.
WEAKNESSES Below average athleticism. Stiff route-runner with dull feet and not much shake to get cornerbacks leaning. Missing the juice to free himself out of his breaks. Slow downfield and can't get over the top of cornerbacks. Focus drops were an issue this year with nine drops. Shows some balance issues in routes and after the catch.
DRAFT PROJECTION Undrafted free agent
BOTTOM LINE Big target with strength who benefited from an outstanding system opened opportunities for receivers. Dangerfield doesn't have the speed to threaten down the field or the separation quickness to open functional windows often enough. His size and blocking ability will be intriguing, but not sure he's athletic enough to earn a roster spot.

A lot of guys who went up that could land with us. Competition is gonna be even tougher than last year's camp. No guard is safe. Big fights for #3-5 corner. Big fight a for wr3-5 as well.
