The #Lions signed former #Saints TE Josh Hill, who has a relationship with new Detroit coach Dan Campbell from New Orleans.

Universal translator on:

"Come on up here and help teach all these guys how we did it in New Orleans during OTA's and camp and then I will cut you...thanks."

Josh Hill doesn’t get enough credit for all he does. He is a good versatile utility tight end. He is a good blocker and can also play fullback. He is not a spectacular receiver but can find holes in coverage and catch passes. He didn’t do as much as a receiver with Cook and the emergence of Trautman but it is good to have a guy like hill as your second or third tight end. Was a little surprised we cut him.

Campbell's gonna sign all our marginal players. It happens EVERYWHERE. Those of you old enough to remember--remember what happened when Bum Phillips came to the Saints?

If you watch ANY Kamara highlight video, most of his big runs will also have Hill on the edge or downfield making a key block that gets AK the TD or a big chunk of extra yardage. I really hope the next guy is as good at blocking as Josh was.

FIFY

Not a hater the guy had a fine career for himself here.
But...averaging the last five years 16 catches and 1 TD per year is not versatile but one dimensional.

Adam Trautman was PFF’s highest graded run blocking TE last season fwiw

Yep, Bum traded our 34 year old QB (Manning) for one of his "bums" from Houston (Leon fricking Gray) and brought in an even older (37) Stabler with his "bum" knees to take over the QB job. We sucked so bad in those days.

I really thought he would end up being brought back and I still think that was the plan to go with finding another rookie TE late in the draft. Now we have to find a veteran TE playing for the league minimum to backup Trautman. Maybe someone like Dan Arnold if they want more of a receiving threat or the guy Hill is replacing in Detroit, Jesse James, if they want a more traditional TE.

What's funny is that in retrospect this will be the most predictable FA signing this entire NFL offseason

I remember hearing on the radio that the coaches were surprised at how good a blocker he was. They thought he was already the best on the team. So PFF may be right on this.

Yeah, that was miserable. He then traded George Rogers for a 1st and then traded a 1st for an old, broken down Earl Campbell.

That's what im saying.

Josh hill is a great 2nd tight end.

This was all about money. If we weren't in a crunch he would be a saint.

Good for the Lions. No one wants to play for Detroit.

I’ll agree with this. Solid TE year after year. Not everyone on the team can be a superstar, you need solid guys that can stay around on decent contracts to build your team upon.
