Roster management notes for next season, via NFLN:

- Players placed on IR now miss a minimum of 4 games (not 3).
- Up to 8 players can be designated to return from IR.
- Players can come back from IR twice in one year.
- Teams can have up to 16 players on the practice squad.

So much better than only a SINGLE Player like it was not too long ago.

Not sure why they need to limit those coming back from IR.

A team can abuse the IR-to return if they there isn't a max.

CSP did it to a certain degree. He would just stash a player (with a very questionable injury) on IR, & start signing available free agents.

You can afford to IR a guy if he's down the depth chart & all the players above him are 100% healthy, b/c he can come back in only 1 month.

It's also a good way to poach other teams Practice Squads.

That COVID year sucked, but they changed a few rules to help teams out.

The cool thing is that they didn't get rid of the rules after that COVID year was over.

I think it used to be like 10 PS players max, only 1 or 2 players could return from IR, & those players had to miss like 8 or 9 weeks minimum.

Not a huge risk as long as there is a time frame on IR (i.e. 4 games). Is it really a risk that the 62nd player on a roster (53 + 8 allowable moves) is being stashed for a quarter of the season? Not sure teams could poach a PS as there is an active game requirement for a player taken from a PS.

IMO, they still should consider increasing the number of players allowed to dress. Shitty that you have 7 players on an active roster that can't play because of an arbitrary "you can only dress 46 players" rule

Thanks for mentioning this. This is easily the rule that I want changed the most. 49 would be my suggestion.

My understanding is this helps the bottom tier of your roster. On a 53 man roster, that means 7 players wouldn't be able to play. If your starting QB is hurt for a game or two then it's no big deal. He's just inactive for a week or two.

But what if it's the 6th WR on the team? If he's going to miss a game you would still sit him because 7 players are sitting any way. But if you could play all 53 players each week then it's likely that bottom tier player would just get cut if they can't play. Or if maybe they're a project player not on the PS but still not worth getting playing time just yet. This protects their jobs.

I like the rule and also acknowledge that the exact numbers (?? Total Players and ?? inactive) can be worked out and/or increased. After COVID I wouldn't mind seeing the total number and active number both bumped up. But there's also only 2000 or so total NFL Player jobs each year so I could also say "Survival of the Fittest" and role from there. I do see the value in being able to develop or hold on to someone that is better than Practice Squad material but not quite ready to contribute for whatever reason.

Teams would abuse it to save roster spots.
