NFL Owners Pass Hybrid (XFL) Kickoff Rule (RIP "Ambush")

The last hope to save the kickoff in the NFL
Kicker kicking off at 35 yd line (not sure what the motivation is to keep from just kicking the ball out of the end zone still... thought they'd push this back to the 30 with this rule change)
Defending (kicking) team lined up at opposite 40
Return team blockers lined up 5 yards away at their 35
Returners lined up at the 5
This idea came from the XFL which first implemented this type of kickoff rule (just had different start points)
Need to do an onside kick? You need to declare it 1st... thus taking away the surprise factor of plays like the famed "Ambush" play the Saints ran to open the 2nd half of Super Bowl XLIV... a play which turned that game's momentum and helped the Saints win their 1st Super Bowl Championship

I'm fine with it. Better than the automatic touchback and commercial it's turned into

NFL is a fricking clown show.
It is, but it doesn't matter one bit. The NFL can do whatever it wants because it knows people will not stop watching. Sure it will lose some audience here and there for different bullshite things it does, but ultimately most everyone will come back that left, and the vast majority of fans won't ever leave.

I'm a little more optimistic that the owners continuing to degrade the game will have and is having an effect. Tipping points are usually unseen.

The NFL sucks
I’m just about done with it
Shame we don’t already have a rival Fall league to switch to (we will soon).

This has to move the %s on 4th towards going for it more.

Rich McKay and the Competition Committee probably have kicked around removing the surprise element ever since “Ambush.”

Watching a couple xfl games last year I like this better than what we have now. Just wish theyd make onside a 4th and 15 from the 40 or something. Those are pointless now, unfortunately.

Apparently this is Rizzi's baby so you would think we should be able to crack the code for some good returns.

It crushed ratings records consistently this past season. Plenty people still are die hards and the NFL knows it. They’re king of the mountain for a reason.

This makes kickoffs almost always have a return so it’s pretty good. The existing rule had kickoffs basically pointless.

Rules are always changed if they favoured the Saints
