The Panthers and Saints aren’t the only teams in the NFC South being linked to Deshaun Watson. On Tuesday, ESPN insider Adam Schefter said the Falcons are a “sleeper team” fAlthough the Falcons are reportedly in the Watson sweepstakes, NFL insider Jason La Canfora revealed that NFL general managers aren’t buying Atlanta as a legit suitor.

“Rival GM’s are not buying Atlanta as a legit suitor for Deshaun Watson but perhaps will prove em wrong. Watson been available for a year Atlanta told teams would not trade Matt Ryan then reworked deal again. With NO and CAR in deep, industry reading this as attempt to drive price,” La Canfora tweeted.

Michael David Smith of ProFootballTalk is also questioning Atlanta’s ability to land Watson.

“Are the Falcons seriously interested in Deshaun Watson or just trying to drive up the price the Saints and Panthers would have to pay? The Falcons would take a $55.5 million cap hit by trading Matt Ryan and then would take on a $35 million cap hit for Watson’s 2022 salary,” he wrote.
It’s unclear when Watson will make a final decision. However, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport mentioned Wednesday as a potential decision day.

Drive up price? Dude the price has already been agreed upon between teams. There is nothing to drive up. It’s up to Dayshawn to decide.

This might allude to MT13 saying the Falcons rumors are smoke and mirrors considering Watson and him share an agent. Falcons cant afford that.

Everyone keeps reporting this based on the Matt Ryan restructured contract but that has not been officially signed yet.

The Falcons offer is as good as any to get to the discussion table. I think Watson chooses us if he wants to win. Them if he wants to be a ball boy again.

I think You’re right about Thomas. But I don’t think the Falcons are just playing. I think they’re genuinely interested. I think they could get Watson. But getting him and then trading Ryan just isn’t feasible, especially if the Falcons want to pair Watson with Allen Robinson and Will Fuller, which I think is part of why he would be interested.

I don’t think Ryan is officially restructured yet but he would still have a dead cap hit of 27M which is pretty steep considering their current cap space. It’s currently at around 19M after they released Tyeler Davison. Enough to trade Ryan and get Watson when they extend him but they’d be over the cap and would have to get under by about 8M and they’d have to release or restructure more deals, which they can do to get under the cap BUT enough to give Watson the weapons he desires (Allen Robinson & Will Fuller?) I don’t even think Khai Hartley could work that kind of cap magic

I think ATL is doing this to try and drive up the trade cost for NO and CAR. It's very curious for them to do this when two other teams in the same division are moving on him. It seems like a smart sabotage to hurt your immediate opponents. It may not work, but it's a shot worth taking.

Then again maybe they are serious about trading for him. It's all a guess at this point anyway

If they have already made an offer good enough for the Texans to accept and allow them to meet with Watson, they are not just driving the price up. They are serious and could be the favorite given that he has waited to hear from them as a late entry before making a decision.

True. But they could also not really be sincere and back out after the interviews.

The parameters of the accepted trade were just "preliminary" there is NO WAY Atl can stomach 75M on just 2 guys for 2022, with only one being on their roster.

Smoke and mirrors

ETA- gotta keep the fans happy, even if they're dumb

Watson controls the situation. The Texans do not. The Texans can charge whatever Watson decides he's willing to allow them to charge.

If NO and CAR haven't already agreed to the terms...the Texans are in really, really bad shape...cause either team could simply suggest to Watson that he hold firm on a lesser compensation offer until the Texans fold.

It's business....they could tell him they explored it but were comfortable with him.

He may get pissy, but he's locked in on contract.
