The New Orleans Saints are wasting one of the NFL's all-time great quarterbacks, likely at the expense of Drew Brees' career legacy. Whether the league deserves some of the blame for its franchise-altering punishment in the bounty scandal is a topic for another day. Just know that the toughest opponent Brees must overcome each week is the Saints' own defense.

Brees' fate is one of the more striking quarterback storylines from the 2015 season, among several outlined in this column with help from advanced metrics.

Just how bad is it for Brees?

He is one of six quarterbacks with a 70-plus Total QBR score over the past two seasons combined. The other five have won 72.7 percent of their games, posting a 96-36 record. Brees has won just 45.2 percent (14-17 record) despite playing about as well. That is because the Saints' defense has not just been bad. It has been horrific.

Saints opponents this season combined for 45 touchdown passes with nine interceptions. Only two players in NFL history -- MVPs Tom Brady (2007) and Peyton Manning (2013) -- have thrown for so many touchdowns with so few interceptions in a season. Which means Brees and the Saints' offense essentially must overcome MVP-caliber quarterback production to win. Good luck with that. Eli Manning, Cam Newton, Blake Bortles, Kirk Cousins and Marcus Mariota combined to throw 26 touchdown passes with only three interceptions in five games against New Orleans. Fifteen NFL teams did not allow 26 scoring passes all season.

Brees is headed to the Pro Football Hall of Fame regardless, but as illustrated below, the quality of a quarterback's defense plays a huge role in shaping his legacy.

Maybe his legacy would look a little better if he had not been passed over in 2009 for the MVP award he earned.

Besides he can't be that great...out of the 4 NFC QB's voted to the Probowl he wasn't one of them.

If the Saints had a top ranked defense, who knows if Brees would have thrown the ball as much as he has as they would not have to play catch-up the whole game, esp in the second half. And if he didn't, what would his QBR and overall numbers be?

I didn't read the article so this may have been address in it.

Welp unless Ireland gets more control we'll keep drafting soft defenive players and we'll keep wasting it.

I'm 100% certain if we do go defense it will definitely not be an SEC player that's for sure. Saints hate tough players.

Been saying this shite for years and the frustration really shows, we need a damn physical mean defense to pair with him not a bunch of good community boys frick that.

I actually like Allen also but please dear god get us some damn intensity on this team. These guys don't even give a frick when Brees does his speech, they are motionless. Brees should not be the vocal leader of this team, a tough mean defender needs to step up and light that fire.

Guess the Packers are wasting Rodgers greatness too because he supposedly the best QB in the modern era with the same amount of rings as Breezy! Just a click-bait article as usual for ESPN.

Yep - 3 division titles in 10 years in this weak assed division is an embarrassment

There's more to it than rings - the Packers have made the playoffs more often, have won the division more often (home playoff games) and earned first round byes more often (easier path to SB).

The Saints have only earned 2 first round byes in 10 years with the 2nd best/most consistent QB in the league during that era. fricking pathetic. Mark Sanchez led the Jets to as many AFC title games in a tougher division and conference as Brees has led the Saints to (not blaming Brees here BTW - it's more Payton).

He was in the AFC Championship game a ton and he made 2 Superbowls with Indy. It's more than just rings - it's about being there in late January and playing in the biggest 4 or 5 games a year.

We all fondly remember the 2006 season and run to the NFCCG. Would have been nice to have a couple more NFCCG appearances even if we ultimately lost. Just because we didn't "win a ring" doesn't mean that the 2006 season wasn't amazing.

How many times did he win? Did someone, say Drew Brees, ever beat him in the Superbowl?

Is it about records? Because Brees shatters those on a yearly basis.

Either you win the superbowl or you dont. It's not like Brees's stats and offense are being affected.

So you didn't enjoy the 2006 season? Give me a break, you're such a clown.

It's a joke that we have only made two NFCCG in Brees' 10 seasons. The ESPN article is spot on.

Yeah i really wish we would've had another NFC Championship or a home field advantage after 2006. IMAGINE WHAT WE COULD'VE DONE!!!

Imagine if we had someone in 2011 that could make a tackle...

You think that season was only special because we made it to the playoffs? Nothing else about the 2006 season was special?

As for enjoying season where we lose in the post season, please ask everyone how excited they were after 2011 and how awesome that season was and how nice it was just to make the playoffs.

How stupid are you?

We won a superbowl dipshit.

So every single quarterback who is on a team that doesnt go the superbowl consistently is wasting their talent?

isn't there some poetic haiku about not about the destination but about the road traveled to get there or some shite?

There used to be a time when 1 SB win validated a career.

Steve Young
Brett Favre
Peyton Manning
Aaron Rodgers
Phil Sims
Kurt Warner
Joe Namath

I would say wasting greatness only applies to teams like IDK say Miami w/Marino, Detroit w/Sanders, etc.

So Rodgers chokes more often in the playoffs. Got it.
