Moving up for a QB probably won't cost us that much

Last year the Chiefs traded their 1st, a 3rd and a 2018 1st to the Bills for Mahomes. Went from #27 to #10

The Texans traded only a 2018 1st to the Browns to move from #25 to #12 to get Watson.

If Baker Mayfield falls out the top 10 (and it can easily happen with how unpredictable the draft is) the Saints would potentially only be giving up a 1st next year for who they hope will be their new franchise face.

TL;DR: It's happening

what about the 3rd you just cited?

so we wouldn't have a 2nd or a 3rd?

doesn't seem ideal

So is next years draft a big suck for QB’s?

Very tolerable though. Setting the franchise up for a zero reset time... that cost is neglible

That was one example. For the Texans to jump it only cost them a 2018 1st. Not too shabby to get a QB and then pair him with the young talent this team has.

Very much so

An article from last month:
LINK

Drew Lock, Shea Patterson, Jarrett Stidham, Clayton Thorsen and Will Grier. Lock is the only real first-round talent, and if he improves, he will be gone way before our pick (assuming we stay par or better for the course).

So yeah, if you want someone that can start in two years at the earliest once Brees is gone, you make your move this year

2020 is supposed to be the next good class. That one might be better than this class. Thing is if Drew retires before then you're looking at starting a rookie QB out the gate instead of having one sit and learn for a couple years.

I think Stidham might be good one

I'd try to move up and if it doesn't happen roll the dice on Mason Rudolph. He can be good with some time to sit and learn.

Every year they say the next draft will be bad for QBs. It’s almost never true

I'm going to take the over that more than one QB taken in the next two years drafts will be starting in the NFL.

You guys do realize there's this thing called free agency. We don't have to scramble to draft a quarterback ..we need to be in win now mode with drew on the way out .. that doesn't include using our first round pick on a bench player.

It's not every other year, but things like the 2010 and 2013 draft happen, and next year definitely looks more like those years than they do the last 4 years (which have varying degrees of success themselves).

And sometimes a QB starts off hot for a year or two and fades, so some of these recent drafts may not look good in the next couple of years.

If we don't get one this year we're likely waiting until 2020. I don't see the QB FA class like they had this year happening for quite a while either.

Imo that's exactly why we should get one now (with next year's class looking pretty barren at the moment). I'd rather have someone come in and see how Brees prepares and pick his brain and be ready to start instead of being rushed in and not really learning how to be a pro first. Many careers have been ruined that way.

Of course this all comes with the caveat that they feel damn sure the guy they're getting is legit, and not just getting one to get one.

I don't know what people see in that guy.

I think it's going to be tough. This might be the year the Pats use all their draft capital to move up and grab one of the top guys. Let's say your the Browns. If you get the QB you want at 1, why not take the Pats two 1s and maybe even their 2s? Mayfield is the guy if its anyone and I don't see him making it out of 10.

If he does, that's our only remote shot.

Yep. This is one of the rare years where I actually feel comfortable enough with what we've done in the draft and FA recently where if they wanted to take their shot at the guy post-Brees, I wouldn't be mad at it. Even if Brees plays two more years, you'd have this guy potentially on a rookie deal for another 2-3 years after.

Given Drew’s age, if the Saints feel like the guy who can come in and lead the franchise for the next 10+ years is available, they’d be crazy not to go get him.

Free agency is almost a waste on QBs. Teams aren't getting rid of starting quality QBs and if they do you have to pay them 20+ million a year. It's much worse to miss on a free agent QB than it is to miss on a drafted QB.
