Well, the "hotline" in question, is an NFL-sponsored source where players can call and check if certain supplements would contain substances that are banned. As I heard it, Michael Smith, on NFL Live, reported that at least the three Saints players called the hotline and were told that the supplement was ok. If this report is true, the point is that the players did their due dilligence and should not be penalized.

The burden will fall on them to prove this is why they tested positive, and that they didn't get the substance form another source.

if the pill was only used for dietary purposes and weight control, then i think they'd be in the clear...however, since it is also taken to mask the use of steroids, that's what's going to get them in trouble...

that's the only reason why it's on the banned list though, right? I'm sure the rule in the book doesn't read "as long as you use this substance for weight loss, then you will not be penalized" Rules are rules!

The pill isn't banned. One chemical that is in the pill is banned.

1-The pill does not disclose use of the chemical in the product.
2-The players verified with the league that the product was safe for use.

If those two things are true, obviously the players did everything possible to insure they broke no rules. However, I don't think they win their appeal. The whole nation is steroid crazy and the league will want to keep its rules air tight so that there is no precedence for future appeals.

Problem with this is that as more and more tests come back and the NFL sees all the positive results among fat DT's they will know they fricked up.

Just cause we don't hear about players winning their appeals, doesn't mean it does not happen.

I think it was coke.

And with the NFL wanting to keep this whole airtight policy then why with Pacman isn't he actually out of the league. I thought he had no more chances, the next frickup and he was gone for good? Didn't he only get suspended four games?

FYI, I have patients that regularly take both Bumex and Cortisol (a glucocorticoid or steroid), and Bumex does not mask cortisol results (when a doctor orders us to draw a cortisol level).

The NFL has an "approved supplements list." If you take anything that is not on that list, you do so at your own peril per NFL rules.

Now, due to the extensive nature of these suspensions (i.e. multiple players on each team) the NFL may try to find some wiggle room to back out of these suspensions. They could use the fact that the players called the "hotline" and the fact that the ingredient was not listed to fall back on.

The fact that the players did call the hotline and made what seems like every attempt to make sure they would be legal should be the deciding factor in the case. There was effort there to make sure they were clean, and I mean just look at them. Do they look juiced? No, Deuce needed to lose weight after his surgeries, and Grant and Smith have always had weight issues. Its not like they are lighting up QB's with 10 sacks each...

You don't think these players would lose weight just by practicing and playing in games?

no, you just can't keep off the weight after training camp. You aren't running as much and your body naturally puts on weight as the weather gets colder. Also, you get a lot more rest during the season due to the amount of contact you have on a sunday

if they are in the "clear" because they called the hotline then why was nesbit suspended?
