re: Mike Mayock says Saints are a nice fit for Pat Mahomes

If he is there at #32, its a no brainer to take him. The organization spent 40+ years searching for the right QB. Mahomes has better physical gifts than Brees while possessing a similar mentality. The chance to have a talented young QB develop behind a future Hall of Famer is really rare & I would hate to see this opportunity go to waste. No fan should want the team wondering in the desert for another 40 years. Without a good/great QB, a team is going nowhere except top 10 in the draft every year.
If you think he's the guy that can lead this franchise for the next 10 years after Brees, how can you wait hoping he just falls in your lap at 32, crossing your fingers that no other team feels the same way ahead of you. I'm like Lester, I don't think he sniffs 32. The Saints are more likely to take him at 11 than 32. But even more likely to trade up from 32 and get him in the late teens/early 20s. If you think he's that guy, how can you afford not to?

I think you're spot on Carl. Payton has worked with a top 3 qb in the league for a decade now. If he thinks Mahomes will be close to what Brees has been here then you absolutely take him. It's just kind of a weird situation because it obviously impedes the teams ability to find a player to help them win now.

Think GB. They took Rodgers in the 20s even though there was no way he was helping them in the next 2-3 years.
With QBs, you either throw the win now rule out the window or ignore the position until you need a QB to win now.
And if you wait and wait and wait until you need one you'll start reaching every draft and become the Browns.

You're right-- it's definitely a weird/awkward situation. It may effectively force Brees out before he's ready to go. Bone mentions the Packers and Favre/ Rodgers-- it could wind up being similar to that where you cant afford to keep sitting the talented, young, 1st- rounder, and the future Hall of Famer goes elsewhere and has a couple of successful years.
I will say this--taking a QB early likely means Payton is staying post- Brees. I had always assumed those. 2 were attached and whenever Brees left or retired, then Payton would be off to Dallas or wherever. If we take a QB 1st round, it pretty much guarantees he stays. Unless Loomis and Ireland have a bigger voice than I think.

Don't forget Montana & Young in San Francisco. When the 49ers took Young #1 in the supplemental draft in 1984 after his stint in the USFL, Montana had already been a 3 time Pro Bowler & Super Bowl Champion by that point.

Yeah I was going to bring up SF too but that may be a little old for the younger crowd to relate to.

I just cant see the saints "wasting" a draft pick on any of these QB unless they have already decided to cut luke mccown.
with chase signed, they have 3 QB now, and they wouldn't have signed chase unless they thought he would be better then what they have with mccown, so IMHO that means they just don't have room for another QB now and wouldn't waste a late 1st or a 2nd round pick on a practice squad player.
if they drafted a QB, they would then face a choice of, do you risk cutting him, and then "hope" to resign him to practice squad if another team doesn't steal him from you? the only other solution I see there is to carry 3 QB on the roster, something they rarely do.
im sure the QB lineup is going to be brees and chase and a practice squad QB. if that happens, im pretty sure mccown will leave if replaced as the #2, and then what do you do with grayson? I don't think he has any trade value so is he worth keeping on as the practice squad QB?
I could see bringing in some undrafted QB after the draft ends to see if one of them is better then grayson

Naw, put some fat on their brains. Some of them need it. You have many who think the illegal contact rule was put in the books because of the Seahawks. They have no clue the rule was first put in place back in 1977 because of Steelers CB Mel Blount would absolutely whip a receivers arse during an entire route. They also think Seattle was the first to use tall corners.

They don't understand that every part of this game repeats itself at some point. Referencing the past can always help in understanding both the present & future. While the game always is evolving, there will always be certain aspects that will always stay the same.

Blount didn't take too long to adjust as he worked his way into the starting lineup in the 1972 season, and shut down opposing receivers, not allowing a single touchdown all year. Blount could adjust to cover any type of receiver, but his specialty was the "bump-and-run," and receivers barely stood a chance. It was that ability that caused the NFL to implement the five-yard bump rule in 1977, a rule where the only time a receiver can be bumped by a defender is within five yards of the line of scrimmage

I didn't see it. What, specifically, was unimpressive?

No velocity on short throws which will lead to cornerbacks jumping routes. He's stiff in the pocket. He just doesn't look like an NFL QB.

From the link in the OP
quote:
"The big-arm throws that most quarterbacks don't like to make: 20-yard comeback, cover-2, throw in between the corner and the safety -- he threw both of those beautifully," Mayock said. "The deep, outbreaking routes where you really got to drive it, he was outstanding. Now, some of the throws he struggled with, I thought he was more concerned about his new footwork and mechanics and forgot to drive the football."

Say what?

This. The draft needs to hurry up & happen. Some the things being posted lately are flat out ridiculous concerning certain prospects.

Mahomes threw the hardest ball at the combine of all the QBs by a nice margin. And threw an 80 yard Hail Mary at his pro day yesterday. And you are questioning his arm strength lol
Posted on 4/2/17 at 4:24 pm to Lester Earl
Jamarcus Russell threw 80 yards too

How many pro days have you watched before???
you know, cause that's something you couldn't access back in the day.

They're something you still can't really watch. You might see parts of them on nfl network or espn. Maybe someone puts them online, or maybe not.
Either way it's highly unlikely someone is able to watch all of a team's pro day (unless you are with the nfl or college).
