quote:

“At the end of the day, I guess I’m retiring because I didn’t think I could make it through another season. I’ve got some health issues and you kind of evaluate how you’re playing and where you see life after football going. And I just made the decision to retire.

“I’ve had some kind of long-term issues that I’ve had to do a lot of maintenance on, lower-body issues, stuff that just bothers me getting into a stance. There’s a doctor that I’ve been in touch with for the last couple of years and he recommended that I do a surgery.

“That would take pretty much all of the offseason and going into Year 11, I couldn’t do that. I’ve known about this for a little while, it’s just kind of been a maintenance issue. But at the end of the day, I’ve done a surgery (foot surgery, in 2017) which took me out for the whole offseason. It didn’t go very well – not the surgery, just my play. To do that going into Year 11, I didn’t think was going to work out.”

This board knows lower body injuries on big men are no bueno. I'd rather Max be able to play with his kids (if he has any) and not be in pain than have him for one or two more years.

Holder had a good take in the Athletic. He said that he hoped once day Saints fans would start referring to the "Jimmy Graham Trade" as the "Max Unger Trade," because we definitely got the better end of the deal and he's earned the recognition. I agree.

I'll miss his consistency and reliability on the line. Center was never a problem while Unger was here, regardless of having a bad game in the playoffs.

It had to be injury related. There was no other way. This confirms it. Thanks for the wins, Max!

Wish he could've gone one more season but nothing but respect for the guy and he deserves to go out however he thinks is best

i respect his reasons but im also sure he saw the NFL will rig SB games so no matter how good you do they wont allow the saints in the SB no matter how obvious the cheating by the refs is so that was equally as big a part in his retiring

why kill yourself and risk all that to get to playoffs or a conference championship game only to have it rigged against you so you cant win

Unger made $45 million just in contracts. Retire while you still have your health. Thanks Big Man for coming to NOLA
