Let's revisit the Patriots, Cooks trade. It saved our season.

I can eat a little crow as someone who wanted the Saints to pull the trigger on the 2nd half of that trade big time. How could we pass up on a #1 CB for an asset like Cooks who was valuable, but we'd knew our offense would keep rolling.

Instead, we end up with Lattimore and Ramcyzk who could building blocks for this team for 10 years.
Without Lattimore we'd have a starting nickel of Butler, Crawley, and Williams. Butler already looks to have fallen off this year and he's already alarmingly close to 30 when CBs usually drop off a cliff. Plus we'd have to pay him 12-15/year and we get rookie salary for 5 years instead. Lattimore also looks like he could be the best CB in the league after not too long. I can't wait to see him up against Julio.

Without Ramcyzk I'm pretty sure Brees is dead at this point considering we'd be down Armstead and Strief with only Peat able to slide out. We'd probably have a guy like Bryce Harris at RT who's a turnstile. Our o-line has finally stabilized and we've got rock solid guys all the way across. Our best teams ever had beastly O-lines and letting those pieces walk have hurt us quite a bit over the past few y
ears.

For once I'm glad the Saints didn't give in and actually came out smelling like roses trading with the Patriots, which not a lot of teams can say.

Got downvoted when I said a first for Cooks was a good trade. He just isn't the player people think he is. Had been saying for years he wasn't even worth the first we drafted him with. I will admit I wasn't happy about Ramczyk initially though but was ok with pick after seeing how second round played out.

Don't look now but he is on a 1250 yard pace in 2017

He's still younger than Michael thomas

But we dont need him is the thing. We needed a OT a lot more than a WR.

Cooks is a great talent but I'm ok not paying a WR top notch money on this team w Drew Brees here

He has gotten to play with Drew Brees and now Tom Brady. He's a borderline top 25 WR. And I don't mean like fantasy/stats wise I mean ability/skill set.

I'm not saying it was a bad trade but let's not bash the guy. He produced and at his age was only gonna get better

The fact that so many were desperate to trade a first rounder for an UDFA in his late 20s in a system that makes a lot of DBs look like interchangeable parts most years was mind blowing.

There’s no bashing. Obviously you have to give up assets to receive assets. What cooks does in New England has no bearing on if the trade was beneficial to the Saints.

Receiving the patriots 3rd rounder for our 4th rounder also paved the way for a lot of flexibility. It’s quite possible that we’re not in a position to go after a “luxury” like Kamara without that inclusion in the trade. We gave up a future 2nd for the 3rd rounder that we used in kamara but would the saints had pulled the trigger on him without having those additional picks in the 3rd to help rebuild the d (Hendrickson and Anzalone)? Maybe not.

I'd be ok with top WR money but I'd want him to be a legitimate top talent like AJ Green or someone of that ilk.

Cooks is very good, sour grapes if anyone says otherwise. Ginn seems to fill some of the gap. More happy we did not trade for Butler.

I think Cooks is a very good deep threat. And I mean maybe one of the best in the league. But he isn't a possession guy whatsoever. Brees has looked to Snead instead for those the years they've both been here. 2014 Graham was the guy. I mean yeah it's fantastic to have a guy who can blow defenses open like that, but just like others have said, he was a luxury in this particular offense. And honestly after he started whining about targets it the start of the divisiveness.

I think i can say without objectivity having Cooks on this team doesn't change the outlook of the season much at all.

I would definitely argue that he can be a possession guy 162 receptions in his 2nd and 3rd year.

Maybe not to the extent of the bigger receivers, but he was on pace for 85 his rookie year as well.

Long-term we can replace him easier than finding a top 10 RT (I think Ramcyzk has that potential easily), but it'd definitely be nice to have him in this offense right now.

I agree with what you said, but it all boils down to this.

Well last year he had 78 catches for almost 1,200 yards. I did not look up stats on where he caught 78 balls but those were not all long balls.

I was happy with the trade as long as we did not flip the first for Butler. Players that complain and bitch in public make me shake my head.

Still need an outside speed threat next year.

What about at his height though?

Midget QB with midget #1 WR is not a winning combo. Saints made a really good trade and then topped it off with a GREAT draft pick.

I'll eat a helping of crow. I wanted Butler bad. I didn't know Lattimore would fall into our laps but man am I glad he did. We'd be up shits creek if Ram wouldn't had been picked with the Pats pick from the trade. Still very early but this draft has the making to rank right alongside '06.

Cooks was good, but like someone said he has had Brees and Brady as QBs.

He is similar to Graham. Brees makes everyone a shade better.
