Saints do have a light at the end of the tunnel.

Brees retires - saves Saints up to 15 mil.

Trade Lattimore - saves 12 mil or resign saves up to 8.9 mil. (Prefer to resign)

Trade Hill - saves 12 mil or resign two more years saves 7 mil. (Would love to trade Hill to Baltimore for a 3rd rounder)

Extend Ram - saves 8.9 mil

Restructure Jordan - saves up to 9.6 mil.

Restructure Thomas - saves up to 8.7 mil

Cut Alexander -saves 10 mil

After that restructures of Jenkins, Easton, Sanders, and Brown could save another 11 mil.

After all this the Saints are still above the cap. Would need to extend Rankins, Hendrickson, and possibly Armstead.

All these moves would not be enough to fit In Watson into the teams cap space unless bigger cuts and trades are made.

But at least the Saints can keep the team together minus Brees, Cook, Alexander, Easton, and possibly Winston

This isn’t madden. In no way, shape, or form does trading lattimore make your defense better

Saving cap space doesn’t do any good if you can’t cover

I hope the Saints resign him.

However the Saints are about 100 mil over the 2021 cap.

So you read an article that basically says we have to gut the roster and your takeaway was that there was light at the end of the tunnel? Jesus Christ

The Saints don’t have to gut the roster.

Get rid of Michael Thomas. How much cap space can that save?

Our defense is significantly better when Kwon plays instead of Anzalone. He was straight up abused last night.

Numerous contracts will have to be reworked, or the Saints will have trade away some really good players. I would resign Alexander; Anzalone is a liability. We need to draft a QB or linebacker with out first pick. I night try to trade Thomas, but who wants that contract? Ram and Lattimore must be priorities.

Brees retires,
Extend Ram & Lattimore,
Morestead retires/cut,
Restructure Jordan, Taysom, Armstead, Kwon & MT13,
Trade Peat,
Eason retires or is traded,
Let Anzalone, Hendrickson & Cook walk.
We will have to replace guys like Robinson and other vets with some UDFA, to trim the rest of the salaries.

We sold our soul to try to win one last one for Brees and now it’s time to pay up. I’m still heartbroken after last night...but I’m legit excited if Winston is our QB next year. Remember that Brees was throwing 40 TDs and 20 Int a game for several years before he started checking down on the regular. If Payton can get Winston to cut down on a few ints, we have a legit shot at being good (maybe even better since we can stretch the field) for another decade and not lost in QB limbo like many other teams when they lose a legendary QB.

The Saints have the most important offseason in years.
I think there have been clubhouse problems all year.
It started with Malcom Jenkins calling out the most non-
racist players in Drew.Micheal Thomas got suspended for
his fight with CGJ and Thomas hasn`t been the same emotionally. The saints offense last part of the year
with Drew unable to throw the ball more than 20 yds ,
limited what we could do.
Its time to reload and get rid of the cancers.

What's the penalty for being over the cap?

Hasn't really been established as a team has never really tried going over.

However, the only exception was the "non-cap" year when they were trying to renegotiate the CBA. We went over by I think $2 or $3 million, and lost that much in cap space the next year.

Still, I think if it were to happen in a regular year, you are talking losing some cap space for next year AND losing draft picks...a rather common penalty for us.

What part of that translates to gutting the roster?

Alexander will be coming off of a ruptured achilles. No one is paying him over $13 million. He will probably be released and possibly signed to a lower deal with incentives.

Yeah, there's gonna be a big bill that is due for our kicking the can down the road efforts. I think Winston can do good, but I'm not sure if he or Hill is the long term answer. However, with the cap being the way it is, you definitely have to use one of them for next year....though I'm not sure if Winston is a free agent next year.

I also think this is very true and really this is the year that you may let some guys walk if they are FAs. Maybe you can play the compensatory draft pick game if you are smart. You can easily get depth for wide receiver and safety this draft that will be much cheaper than Jenkins.

Further, as much as I don't like Peat, you may consider moving him to left tackle and trying to trade Armstead if you can. Yes, Project Peat and all, but you did sign him to that dumb contract while Armstead is a FA in 2022. It may be time to make that adjustment while you can.

In the last three years, Kwon has a torn pec, torn biceps, ACL tear, and achilles rupture. With our situation, I don't know. Seems like a strong cut candidate. He's just not ever available.
