I've felt that Winston has been auditioning for his next team and will get traded before the season starts.

But this simply isn’t accurate. We aren’t tied up financially with him at all.

Whether he gets cut or plays out this year, his contract will have the same exact cap hit. His salary this year is fully guaranteed so he will have a $4.5M this year, and $10.7M next year. So, if they don't want to roster 3 QBs + Taysom, they will need to cut Winston. Haener is not making it to the PS.

Peat is in a similar situation. His cap hit this year is $8.8M, and he will have $13.6M in dead money on the cap next year. If he's cut the dead money next year remains the same, but his cap hit this year drops to $7.3M (his $1.5M salary is not guaranteed).

This is correct.

I think what JD was getting at is there comes a point where the money you're paying out makes it unrealistic to not have that player on your roster.

I don't get it TBH, If a guy sucks arse and you're locked into paying him no matter what and there is a promising potentially better option behind him then just cut the player that sucks and eat the money. But this isn't how it works a lot of times.

Winston has no pocket presence. When he gets pressure, he brings his vision down and loses his downfield receivers. His composure is sketchy even when he's playing his best. Somewhat like Jim Everette used to be. I liked it when he was a Buc. Our defense kept him rattled.

I think the difficult part will be trying to figure out just how much dead money the team wants to carry into next season. You can't restructure dead money, but you can rework deals with players, maybe extend a shitty player another year, and kick the dead money can down the road (this is the shite SFP constantly bitches about). Winston & Peat will hit the cap next year for $24M while also not being on the team. The 2024 cap is currently projected at $240M, that's 10% of your cap on 2 players that won't count towards the 53 man roster. And doesn't factor in other players getting cut between now and the beginning of the new year (Trequan will have a $1M dead hit when cut/not resigned)

Peat will be a post June 1 cut and will only be a $7mm dead cap hit, Winston is a $0 dead cap hit for post June 1 cut.

It wasn’t covered as much as it should have been, but Peat and Winston did the Saints enormous favors.

If you cut Winston then Taysom is the #2. Aint no fukin way the Saints are going to roll with Haener as the #2 hes not there yet.

I can see them brining in a veteran QB to be the #2

That would be awesome. I was going off of OTC & sportac and they still show the bonus money spread out over the next few years

Winston is going to be the 2 and people are going to bitch.

Unless Carr gets hurt who cares.

Knock on wood, but it feels like there haven't been any big starting QB injuries yet this year. If something happens, maybe Jameis becomes enticing enough to unload?

Why would you release him? Seriously, he’s done. Not worth at any price. Waivers please.
