Cooks and Graham wanted crazy money and were becoming locker room problems allegedly. Looking back, I think they did pretty good on both trades. They thought Sproles was on the downslope of his career because of age and injuries. Payton has said numerous times that letting him go is something he regrets.

Just fine? Like 6-10? Thomas is the only consistent receiving threat on this team if you take AK out of the equation.

No to that deal.

But yes there is I'm sure a offer that could be made to seal the deal.

Enticing is murky. A slam dunk deal would be called for.

Trade a proven border-line Hall of Fame caliber WR in his prime for draft picks/unknowns? Only universe that makes sense in is if the Saints are tanking or in desperate need to fill talent at other positions. Even when Brees retires that won't be true.

I think only if we were moving up for a high end qb prospect. None of these guys worth it.

Then what’s the point in even trading him?

It would take a lot. And I mean a lot. Elite, no issues.

I think at minimum a top 10 pick. Multiple 2nd, 3rds, and a starter back.

But I'm not sure why you would with literally no other receiving threat on the roster.

I’d be curious to revisit the answers here if Brees actually does retire at years end. I know that’s not what OP is asking, I’m simply saying I could see the answers to this question being completely different in 365 days.

If Brees had five years left to play you probably have to trade him or hope you hit pay dirt on another wr in the draft bc you couldnt pay him that much and have a really good wr core bc you couldn't afford it. Since Brees is retiring soon you pay him and hopefully get a friendly prove it deal from Bridgewater or strike gold on a QB in the draft then you can spend money like the browns are on receivers...I can't remember the last team that won a Superbowl with 50 million in cap going to one wr and a QB.. probably bc there isn't one

Does MT play even play this year without a new contract?

I think they will franchise him and then let him walk. I do not think we dedicate that high of a percentage of the cap to a WR. As much as I like Thomas, it's not smart cap management.

I do not think they trade him under any scenerio prior to that time, because we are clearly in SB mode this year.

Franchise tag cost in 2020 might be 16-17 mill. So that combined with his current last year on contract (1.2 i think), he's forced to play 2 years for 18ish million. He knows he's worth at least 18 per now.

Yes he does, and I still can't see us dedicating that much of cap to the WR position. Teams that consistently win don't dedicate that large percentage of cap to WR. Taking a one year his is one thing, but being stuck long term with it is difficult.

QB, DE, LT, DT, CB are all more important and valuable positions, and these are the ones that winning teams attribute the highest cap percentages to.

My opinion would be the same. Even assuming the Bridgewater thing doesn't pan out it would be helpful to a new/developing QB to have someone like Michael Thomas as a receiver. Also, it isn't as if the Saints are bereft of talent on offense outside of Brees. The O-Line is relatively strong, you have a Kamara/Murray combo at RB, and retain Thomas at WR to compliment all of that. Just as Brees made some marginal skill position players look better, so can excellent skill position players make a young/lesser talented QB look better.
