I seriously believe Dick Lebeau could take me and 10 of my closest buddies and field a decent defense. The guy's a genius.

The DB backfield is just laughable for an NFL team to be fielding. I'm not sure where we dug some of these no names up from

There is no secondary in football that would look good with the front seven we field. None.

This is a multi-year rebuilding job for sure. We've let Payton piss away draft picks for offensive parts so many times that this was inevitable.

we have invested a lot of early picks on defense

cam jordan
p rob
jenkins
ellis
harper
porter

i'm sure i'm missing some. they've been solid guys, with some flaws. greer was a good FA pickup. sharker was a great one, he was just old. loftin was a good FA pickup

will smith needs to be cut. he's just not good and his cap hit is insane. i think that's about as much of a lock as we'll see from any team this offseason

we probably need to dump ellis if it's feasible and get another DT if possible (obviously that's situational)

we need OLBs...badly

we need 1 legit pass rusher, badly (that will be hard to do, as that's tough to find for every team)

that's before we even address the secondary

Not true, we just missed on talent when drafting defense. We took Ellis, Jenkins, PRob all in the 1st round during "Payton's pissing draft picks era".

They problem is they didn't pan out.

I still don't understand why we drafted an offensive player in the 1st round in 2007.

I'd keep Jordan, Hicks, Greer and Jenkins. Everyone else can GTFO

You said everybody can get GTFO, but you kept Jenkins terrible arse on your keep list

Most ppl don't but it happened. We've taken plenty early round defensive players that the Saints just missed evaluating.

The defensive hasn't been neglected, we just haven't been successful drafting on defense.

Ellis is done. He's off the books.

Ellis is an UFA.

...and I think PRob was the only defensive player we took that year if memory serves.

We've used more picks on offense than defense most draft classes since Payton's been here, 'pissing away' might be hyperbole, but traded up for both Mark Ingram and Antonio Pittman for christ's sake.

I hope we don't use our first round pick on a DT. The last two times we have, it has backfired.Ellis isn't as bad as some people make him out to be but I'd be fine with it if he walks. The Sullivan pick was a disaster.

+1,000

they are constantly taking bad angles to the ball and we really haven't had any speed at the position in a LONG Time.

agreed. By the time we pick the elite rushers will probably be gone. But I'm all for taking a DE or even a OT with our first pick. We have to get better on both sides of the line of scrimmage before anything else.

2009 Draft Class

1 Malcolm Jenkins CB Ohio State
4 Chip Vaughn S Wake Forest
4 Stanley Arnoux LB Wake Forest
5 Thomas Morstead P Southern Methodist

2010 Draft Class

1 Patrick Robinson CB Florida State
2 Charles Brown OT USC
3 Jimmy Graham TE Miami (FL)
4 Al Woods DT LSU
5 Matt Tennant OG/C Boston College
7 Sean Canfield QB Oregon State

2011 Draft Class

1 Cameron Jordan DE California
1 Mark Ingram RB Alabama
3 Martez Wilson LB Illinois
3 Johnny Patrick CB Louisville
7 Greg Romeus DE Pittsburgh
7 Nate Bussey LB Illinois

Those were all the draft picks under Gregg Williams' watch. There were plenty of defensive players taken & many are duds but go ahead a continue making statements about Payton wasting draft picks on offensive players.

The truth is Gregg Williams is just the gift that keeps on giving. His horrible choices in defensive draft picks has this defense where it currently is. His pay for performance system & idiotic way of trying to get players hyped is what cost the team Payton for this season.
