With Shough at QB and a healthy Chase young on defense we’ve beaten the two division leaders with winning records and should’ve beaten the Dolphins who are playing really well right now.

Lost to the Falcons largely because Grupe missed two gimme FGs and Kellen was awful at managing short yardage (also cost us in dolphins game) and then Rams coming out of a bye just whupped us in every phase.

Only two games all season we’ve just looked totally outmatched are on the road against Rams and Seahawks, probably the two best teams in the nfl.

Someone is going to win this division at 9-8 or 8-9 Bucs are older and poised to take a step back.

Their window is closing Carolina and Atlanta are in similar positions as us.

It’s all predicated on QB play

So you think the “close” question wasn’t about actually fielding a competitive team relative to the rest of the league…but instead just relative to our division which happens to be very weak?

Winning 8-9 games and competing for the division in 2026 would be well ahead of schedule considering a large contingent of this board deemed this the “worst roster ever” in preseason.

Winning the division is always priority #1

And if you’re winning your division your competitive to the rest of the league

I'm not sure how close they are but we clearly have a solid coach and a capable, young QB. The defense is not bad but we need to maintain succession planning for some of the older starters. We need 3 good OL at least one very good WR and an elite RB for when Kamara is done.

Not sure when they win the division or go to the playoffs - probably 2 to 3 years minimum but we are aided by being in a weak division.

We are playing semantics.

From a talent standpoint, this team is easily in the bottom 10.

If that team ends up being competitive in its division, it certainly doesn’t mean it’s capable of competing with the rest of the league.

This team is years of good decisions away from truly being competitive.

Are you under the impression that the league is loaded with “good teams” ? Confused what league you are watching.

I think winning the division could be in reach as soon as next year depending on a few things:

1. We must draft well and not be idiots in our offseason moves (might be asking a lot)

2. Do the Panthers take another step forward?

3. Are the Bucs actually in a decline or are they just the same 8-10 win team they've been since Brady retired?

4. Do the Falcons get serious and move on from Raheem Morris?

Where would you rank this team (1-32) from a talent standpoint.

Bottom 10 or so, but we have a lot of young players that are starting and could change that. I’d say if you separate the defense from the offense that it at least may be closer to the average.

We have five starters from the 2025 draft alone. If Shough ends up being above average you can mask a lot of holes.

Yeah, you can make that argument, but the fact remains this team is terrible. People saying worst Saints of all time don’t know what they are talking about, but this team is still really bad.
No, I don’t think this team is close. They weren’t with Rattled as the qb and, even if he is better, they aren’t close with Shough. Need quite a few pieces AND their backups to field a competitive team every week. I think they are still 2 good drafts/FA acquisitions away from that. But I am encouraged by what I’ve seen, particularly with some younger players development.

So you agree with me.

Again, what are we talking about? Are we talking about a 7-9 win season in a putrid division like we were getting with Dennis Allen? And, we are referring to that season as an example of being competitive...and we are asking how close we are to that?

Or, are we talking about having a team that on a given day could make a run through the playoffs...similar to the Redskins last year. We are years away from the latter.

Commanders
Giants
Panthers
Falcons
Titans
Raiders
Jets
Browns
Steelers
Dolphins
Bucs
Vikings
Colts
Cowboys
Cardinals

You aren’t watching enough NFL if you think the Saints can’t be just as good if not better than all those teams next year. And that’s being generous to teams like the Bengals assuming they get it figured out with Burrow or the Bears not being a one-hit wonder.

There’s a lot of parity in the NFL. All the original post was saying is it seems we’re a lot closer to the meaty middle than we are the Raiders/Titans/Jets/Browns. Once you’re in the meaty middle it just takes one good off season and some close game luck to go 10-7/11-6.

You’re moving the goalposts. If I’d have to guess, you are still married to whatever “worst roster ever” take you had in the summer.

First, 7-9 wins with a young qb, coach, and roster is a lot different than hoping 35 year old Derek Carr and retread Dennis Allen will do anything of note. Second, that isn’t the ceiling like it was in the prior regime. If we are winning 7-9 games next year and continuing to build then the hope would be to win playoff games in the following years.

The Commanders have a putrid roster. Goes to show what an above average qb can do with a favorable schedule and good offensive coaching.

Did you just skip the part where I said this team is terrible?
They suck and they have been bag worthy most of this year. Winning one watery twat TB game changes little.

The Bears and Panthers were 5 win teams last season. Patriots and Jaguars won 4. They all picked in the top 10,

The right coach and QB accelerates a rebuild. This roster isn’t good and they’ll come away with 4-5 wins. They’ve competed in every game outside of 3.

Now there is no guarantee the picks or FA hit but this is the same blueprint any bottom dweller to competitive team follows. I have no expectations for ‘26 and this is a dumb thing to even argue about without seeing the roster next year
