re: If the Saints draft so well, what’s the reason for many piss-poor rosters over the years?

'23 and '24 weren't great either.

Didn't win enough, couldn't stay healthy, and his contract extended our cap hell from the Brees era which kept us from pursuing FA. He and his contract are also why Loomis went all-in and gave away picks for Penning and Olave to try to get two cheap players at crucial positions to make Carr successful (didn't work).

During the mid 2010’s when our defensive numbers were historically bad, I remember reading a breakdown of the salary cap by group. Not surprising, a vast majority of our cap space went to offensive players. The second largest group was dead money, and the defensive players cap space was third. Based on that, not surprising the defense was as bad as it was.

Even then we tried.

We went out and got Keenan Lewis, Jairus Byrd, and Delvin Breaux. Would have been a great secondary if they could see the field.

They dont. Look at the picks and player and throw out 2006 and 2017. Thedrafted great twice and sucked most of the rest

Being over loyal to higher picks instead of signing talent.
