If Payton goes anywhere. I hope it is Chicago.

I’ll always be thankful of Payton and hope he succeeds elsewhere. Just don’t want that to be in Dallas.

I don't care where it is as long as it's next year. I want to have optimal leverage for a trade.
If he waits until his contract is void that would be a bummer.

The Bears are a rebuild job with limited draft capital for this draft being that to jump up to No. 11 for Justin Fields, the Bears sent the New York Giants the 20th and 164th overall pick in 2021, as well as 2022 first- and fourth-round picks. That means they will desperately need their 2023 & 2024 high draft picks. I doubt they will be willing to part with such capital for a coach only for him to be limited on draft picks to rebuild with once he gets there.

I know but my point still stands. If they want to try to trade for Payton in a year or two, it will cost them. They don't have a 1st round pick here in 2022 & trying to acquire Payton would cost them. If Fields doesn't pan out (which I strongly feel that he won't) then it's back to the drawing board again for that organization. They also currently have a severe need at the skill positions on the offensive side of the ball. They need to hang onto as much draft capital they have based on their current situation.

He'll be in Dallas next year. McCarthy will be fired after 2022. Dude is a lame duck. But I don't think there is much to worry. With Duck Prescott at QB he ain't going anywhere.

I know Dallas seems to be the conventional wisdom but i really can see him in a place like Los Angeles with the Chargers. Good young roster with Herbert. I wont pretend to know how good or bad their current coach is but it feels like they can use an upgrade just from watching a few of their games.
There are already articles out there that have said Payton has no interest in Chicago. I dont see them much of a destination.
He is going to look at the whole picture. Dak has been banged up these last few years and im not sure how much he really wants to play under Jerry

Just because Prescott is there now doesn't mean he'll be there long-term with if they are willing to consider trading for Payton. I could see Jerry listening to Payton if Payton tells him they can't get it done w Dak. Chances are they would want to see Dak under Payton for at least a year; but either way there are teams that will see value in Dak and may be willing to offer decent compensation (to offset some of what it would take to get Payton)
If they trade Dak in '23 they save $1.5M against the cap; but if they trade in '24 (after 1 year with Payton under this hypothetical) they save around $20M and can probably get 1 of their 1st round picks back.

Which is why no matter how much smoke there is, I don't see him ever going to Dallas. Then again, if he did I probably wouldn't believe it until I see him on their sideline

I’d love to see him go to Dallas, and think Jerry will let him run the show like he did here… not sure it will be as great a partnership everyone thinks it would be..

I feel the same. The media keeps pointing to the fact that Payton & Jones seem to be friends but not everyone feels that they can work for/under certain friends. Payton is going want & need so much control & I just don't think he gets that in Dallas with Jones. Also, the media coverage & scrutiny there is not something he would enjoy. The next burn out would come even quicker there.

I hope it is Atlanta—that he intentionally fricks up their draft as badly as he can get away with without being fired after the first round, then retires before the press conference to introduce the early round picks

The Bears fanbase are melting over the Matt Eberflus hire. They feel like it's an underwhelming hire especially since he's a defensive coach. They all wanted an offensive coach to come in & help coach up Justin Fields but it just felt like no good offensive minded coaches were willingly to hitch their head coaching wagon around a team lead by Fields nor did they want to deal with the structure of Bears management.

You get the coach you deserve, and the Bears got an Eberflus. That’s not necessarily a shot at the 51-year-old coach — though it might end up being one.
