Ian Rapoport says the Saints are the front-runner for Derek Carr

Derek Carr is busy meeting with the New Orleans Saints on Wednesday, and we’ve got some insight on the situation from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. Rapoport broke things down during an appearance on the Pac McAfee Show, in which he said the Saints are the front-runner to acquire the Las Vegas Raiders quarterback. That doesn’t mean things are signed, sealed, and delivered, but it does mean things are trending that way.
One point Rapoport clarified is that the Saints and Raiders have not necessarily agreed on trade compensation so much as reached an understanding on the framework of a deal: “What my understanding of the situation is, he was only going to be allowed to visit if a team was willing to give the compensation that it would take to do a trade. … They’re in the ballpark. They’re in the conversation. It’s not like, I know the pick, here’s what it is. It’s like, yeah, this is kind of the range a pick might be.”
And Rapoport added other scenarios to the discussion: what if Carr is willing to redo his contract to facilitate a trade, which would add incentive to the Raiders in taking on some of his salary, thus increasing the asking-price? What if Carr doesn’t want to weaken the Saints by forcing them to send a draft pick when he could wait and sign with them as a free agent? What if the Saints aren’t willing to pay him what he’s seeking on a contract extension?
These are all topics that will be discussed during his visit, and any scenario will change the specific draft-pick compensation going back to Las Vegas. At the end of the day, everyone needs to be on the same page. Carr and the Saints need to agree on the money. The Saints and the Raiders need to agree on the trade compensation. If either of those two conversations go sideways, a trade won’t happen.

I mean, is this really news? The fact no other team has been scheduled a visit this early clearly shows he wants to be here, barring being swooned somehow by the Jets.

This kind of is the news that no one else so far has made a move and even if they have inquired he or the Raiders haven't signed off on it.

Best case scenario is that Carr is so loyal to DA that he agrees to not waive his no trade clause to save us the draft pick, forces the Raiders to cut him on the 15th, and signs a below market contract immediately with the Saints.

Once would think if the Saints like Carr and Carr likes the Saints and the two of them can agree on his contract, the only thing that happens if they wait is it screws the Raiders out of compensation if they are forced to cut him and screws their cap and may team if they decide to keep him.
One thing it seem to do is prevent the Raiders from asking for ridiculous compensation in a trade.
I guess good faith would keep all sides at least typing to work together. But any trade for Carr needs to have MT13 going out. IMO Especially if we give up a 3rd for him

If you’re the Saints, until he’s in the building, signing on the dotted line, he could always change his mind and want to play in New York. So if you’re the Saints, you’d like to get an agreement from Carr and to go ahead and lock him down via trade so he doesn’t have the chance to go elsewhere.
But clearly the Jets want him but aren’t willing to send over picks. There are also reports he we wants to at least meet with the Jets and maybe another team or two before making a decision. That would def hurt the Saints.

Saints are about to start announcing new restructures. MT 2nd Restructured and pushed forward he's not going to be leaving. Not sure when the news drop is gonna hit.. but apparently MT is ecstatic about this.

Adding Derek Carr could help the Saints keep Michael Thomas
The last time the New Orleans Saints restructured their contract with Michael Thomas, it seemed to tee up an early release that would send Thomas off to continue his career elsewhere. But the news surrounding Derek Carr might introduce a change of plans. The Saints can always circle back to their contract with Thomas, renegotiate things, and run it back with him in 2023. Of course the first step is acquiring the former Las Vegas Raiders quarterback, possibly by a trade.
Adding an established passer — like Carr — could have real appeal to Thomas as he works to get his body right and reestablish himself as one of the league’s best wide receivers. Davante Adams just led the league in touchdown catches (14) while totaling 100 receptions for 1,516 yards with Carr as his quarterback. Thomas could very well be looking at him as someone who can revive his career.
That’s the main selling-point New Orleans can offer Thomas, but there are other factors at work. He wouldn’t have to relocate and pick up a new offense in another NFL city. He likes his coaches and the new Saints training staff the team brought in last summer. There aren’t many players who have spent their entire career with just one team, and that might matter to him, too.
But it comes down to money. Thomas can’t play on his contract as it is currently written. If nothing changes and he suits up for the Saints in the fall, he’ll trigger a whopping $60 million cap hit in 2024 by dressing out for at least four games. The Saints will need to meet with him and his agent and hash out a new arrangement. A pay cut would have to be discussed, and the likeliest scenario is that his current contract gets ripped up, processed, and redone altogether. A one-year deal featuring heavy incentives could make sense and set up Thomas to cash in next offseason if all goes according to plan.
It would be an unexpected twist to his story with the Saints, but stranger things have happened. Thomas commented in a since-deleted tweet on Tuesday evening that he’s keeping receipts on everyone speculating about his future in the NFL, advising them to “stay tuned” about his next move:
Maybe this means something, maybe it doesn’t. We’re entering the busiest months of the Saints offseason and cryptic tweets like this one are all the rage. We’re all just along for the ride. The only thing certain is that the road ahead of us it uncertain. It feels unlikely that Thomas plays for New Orleans in 2023, but we can’t rule it out, especially if the Saints get their quarterback.
