Actually wasn't that bad until the tail end of his career
He caught shite that was Josh Bullocks fault, which proved out once we moved on from Thomas and that side of the field was giving up huge plays still.

I still remember the play when he was with the Bears against the Lions and they threw the ball to one side of the field and he literally ran full sprint the other way after the ball was in the air.

Fred Thomas is a good metric of who is a true Saints fan and who just regurgitates shitty takes. He was our best CB for a long time until he got old and hurt.

In fairness, I really only remember the tail end of his career as I was born in the 90's.

Jasons Davids first play, he Picked Sixx or picked up a fumble and ran it back for a TD with the Saints.

After that, It went down hill. Pretty fast too.

Josh Bullocks

Maybe the worst safety to wear a Saints uniform. Close between he and Tebucky Jones.

Russell Erxleben is the correct answer. The Saints had a great offense but no defense in 1979. Drafting a punter - any punter - with their 1st round draft pick ranks as one of the worst front office moves of any franchise in any sport of all time. I was just a kid and knew it was a bad omen. The bottom fell out of the Saints and they became the Aints shortly after that.

I’d take 3 Jason David’s over 1 Brandon Browner.

To be fair, they actually thought they were drafting a strong legged kicker, who also just happened to punt. He was making 60+ yarders in college.

The problem was that he was a straight-on kicker. At the time, colleges allowed kickers to use a 1" or 2" tee. For straight-on kicker, that’s huge. No one from the idiotic front office of the Saints took the short ride to Austin to find out if Erxleben could kick off the ground as the NFL did not allow for kickers to use tees.

When he got to the Saints, he was a total bust as a kicker because he couldn’t kick off the ground. He was still a punter but an average punter at best.

He was also a cocky piece of shite. When he first got to the Saints, the Saints had a decent kicker named Rich Szaro (from Harvard btw). Szaro was wearing #15, which was Erxleben's number in college. Therefore, the Saints gave Erxleben #14. Erxleben wasn’t happy and made some snide comment about since Szaro was going to be cut anyway, they should give him #15.
