This has been mentioned before but how many real open spots in the starting 22 we really have?

QB - Drew
RB - Kamara/Ingram
FB - Line or Kuhn?
LT - Armstead
LG - Peat
C - Unger
RG - Warford
RT - Ramczyck
TE - OPEN / Fleener
WR - Michael Thomas
WR - OPEN

1 or 2 starting spots open on the offense.

RDE - OPEN (Okafor?)
DT - Davidson / Onyamomma
DT - Rankins
LDE - CAM JORDAN
OLB - OPEN
MLB - A.J Klein
ILB - OPEN
CB - Marshon Lattimore
CB - Ken Crawley
SS - OPEN (Vaccaro?)
FS - Marcus Williams

Without resigning Okafor and Vaccaro we have 4 positions open on the starting defense.

So that's roughly 6 prime starters total on the 22 starting roster but behind them, we already have some pretty damn good depth.

What do you guys think of our open starting positions?

I’d say with Peat injured G may be open and gotta say CB opposite Lattimore is open, Crawley is a good backup but not an everyday starter, too many penalties.

Te'o will be here, could man the other ILB spot.
Okafor should be our top priority as far as re-signing.

Don't be surprised if they keep Hill around - he actually played really well in the postseason and is our best blocking TE.

Agreed keep Hill , cut fleener after this year and either draft a TE in the 3rd round or pick up someone in FA.

Offense:
TE and WR2
- Fleener and Ginn are good TE2 and WR3, but we need upgrades.

Defense:
RDE, OLB, SS, and arguably DT
- Hendrickson is still raw, not sure about Okafor and his health
- Robertson has one side locked down, Anzalone is still a question mark at the other
- Vaccaro is gone, Bell is a solid backup but he's not starting material IMHO. That piss poor effort on his part to end the playoff game also made me want to throw a playbook at him...Harper and Jenkins would be ashamed.
- Onyemata and Davison are good rotation guys, but neither are difference makers IMHO.

Why only blocking TE?
Hill has made some grabs.

I'd love to see Hill take the next step.

He looks the part, for sure.

I meant that his receiving improved in the postseason; his blocking had always been consistent.

Working off of this list I will say this: Ireland is hitting on about 4-5 starters or high contributors a year.

TE - OPEN / Fleener
WR - OPEN

RDE - OPEN (Okafor?)
OLB - OPEN
ILB - OPEN
SS- Open

Lets assume those are the most glaring needs. I would say this is how I would set things up.

1st Round OLB/RDE
2nd Round WR
3rd Round TE
4th Round ADD Rush DE

I want experience in both these positions.
Free Agency---SS
Free Agency---ILB

Besides what you listed, I think all LB jobs could potentially be upgraded and so could DT opposite Rankins.

Very true. Our team is pretty loaded with depth too, and with the other football team we had on IR last year, we also have experience in that depth now.

If our LBs are healthy than that unit is pretty good. Problem last year was that our LB core was hit hard by injuries. Maybe not surprising given the fact that Analzone was so injury prone in college. He was boom or bust, but that is ok with me as a rookie OLB. He will be better.

DE opposite side of CJ is our biggest position of need.

You can go ahead and count Nickel Corner as a starter. Those guys are on the field a lot.

If Anzalone can stay healthy...he should be viewed as a starter imo. He's a perfect weakside 4-3 OLB in our system.

Klein will either start at MLB or SLB. Te'o is a damn good backup MLB, & Robertson can play all 3 LB positions.

I think we just need to add a legit MLB or SLB, & he better be able to cover. Personally, I'd rather add a MLB.

WLB - Anzalone/Robertson
MLB - New Guy/Te'o/Robertson
SLB - Klein/Robertson

Not sure if Stupar makes the team, but he could give you a spot start in case of injuries as well. Jonathan Freeny looked good at the end of the year as well & could potentially provide depth.

As far as the other needs on defense...I'm hoping we re-sign Okafor. That would just leave us with 1 more starting need on defense. We need someone to cover the slot. Vonn Bell will get plenty of playing time as well (especially in obvious running situations). I like our DT's more than some people on this board. If Rankins, Davison, & Onyemata can all stay healthy...I'm actually ok with just these 3 guys.

On offense, we definitely need another legit WR to go along with Thomas & Ginn. We're going to have Fleener & Hill at TE, so I don't think we necessarily need a starter. We probably need to draft a TE in the top 3 rounds though imo.

Also if we can't re-sign Kelemete...we're going to need a new plug-in O-Lineman. Also, Ramczyk is the only RT that we have now that Strief is probably retiring.
