I would have thunk so.

Considering the cap implications if he doesn't, I'm ok with this (since it isn't my money)

very objective. mickey may have some faults and may not bat 100%. is this news breaking compared to every other GM out there. The reactions are emotional and petulant.

I don’t believe attacking Gayle Benson personally is the right avenue of attack to effect change with the Saints.

Current upper management of the Saints was put in place by Mr Benson through the Benson Trust. Mr Benson was not only protecting the team from children but his wife, as well.

Gayle Benson is not running the team and is legally respecting her late husband’s wishes by simply doing nothing.

Pressure has to be applied directly or indirectly to Loomis. He is fair game. Collectively, like booing Goodell at the NFL draft, Saints fans need to boo, Loomis.

Peat is a bit of a mystery. FA in 2024. Does he want to come back and play LT? How well did he grade out? Looked like the Peat we drafted

Hurst is a play anywhere on the line guy. Makes a great backup lineman. Keep him if you can. FA in 24

Penning a 1st round bust? Maybe maybe not. He wouldn't start the season at LT if the Saints thought him a bust. He will find a spot on the oline somewhere. If he had been drafted beyond the second round few would be calling for him to go after so few games

Evans and Saldiveri will compete for a starters job next year.

McCoy and Ruiz are FA in 25.
So if Peat is happy to play LT leaves LG and RT to fill.
Lathem at 14th in 1st round would be nice. 2nd round has a couple of nice tackels as well.

My best case:
Peat wants to play LT Penning accepts he is not yet ready for LT and takes over the LG(what a huge left side that would be} McCoy Ruiz at C and RG. Lathem in 1st or Fuaga in 2nd for RT.

Verse in 1st Fuaga or RT in 2nd

edited Peat info

Rummaging through OTC, and found some updates to contracts:

Hurst: 2024 base salary of $3M, cap hit of $6.5M, FA in 2025 w/ $500k dead money

Peat: FA in 2024 w/ cap hit of $136M due to void year

McCoy: 2024 base salary of $9.6M, cap hit of $13.7M, FA in 2028 w $0 dead money

Ruiz: 2024 base salary of $1.35M, cap hit of $10.85M, FA in 2028 - set-up as a void year, but nothing assigned to it. Makes me believe the $8M roster bonus about to be due has an auto trigger to spread over 5 years which would drop his 2024 cap hit to $4.45M ($6.5M savings)

Spotrac has Peat as a FA in 25. I didn't look elsewhere

The saints have a ton of dead money tied in him, so he can play fb for all I care. I just wanna find a way to get something for that money, and it seems tackle is proving too strenuous on those knees right now

I like to volley between both sites. IMO, OTC lays out the details in a way that makes it very easy to see when someone will be a FA, have void years, $0 base salary... Spotrac is great with the details, and typically appears to be more accurate. And the only site I've seen that will break out most of the nuances and performance bonuses

I’m not so sure Peat is gone. Dare I say it, he finally looked pretty good at LT.

It’s really frightening how historically bad this OLine could have been if Peat hadn’t played reasonably well after being moved to LT. He was more than serviceable.

We start more threads blaming Gayle and Mickey for Ramczyk's knee exploding and Penning's injuries the first year of his career.

They knew the knee was on borrowed time when Loomis ridiculously extended the contract.

Penning wasn’t hurt much this year, it’s just another 1st round reach bust in a long line of crappy draft moves.

Loomis and Gayle’s chickens have come back to New Orleans to roost.

One would think after 10 years and hundreds of starts Penning would have improved by now!

Penning can't even get on the field right now for a very weak OL group. Sorry, but when you are a 1st round pick you are expected to produce. Not by the fans. But by the team that picked you. He hasn't...at all. Then you combine that with the fact Ruiz, the Saints most recent 1st round OL pick before Penning, is one of the worst guards in the league, and that's two big misses for a team who can't really afford to miss in the draft because of their perpetual salary cap issues.

If you cut the nfl players who didn't play well in their first 6 starts you would field few teams. Not saying at all he has played well. He could be a lot of things good and bad if given time. But to say he is a 'bum. a bust and cut him now' is idiotic and overwrought emotion.
I heard the exact same things said about Strief for his first three years from many a Saint fan..."the dude is a bum, surely we can do better". He got better. Ended up cooking food in the Whitehouse kitchen one day

Streif was a 7th rounder. Not quite the same investment, is it?

Do you really think this board will give a saint or the saints any rational thought? Every saint from loomis to the water boy is a total trash heap.

Perhaps not. But as long as I find humor in it all I'll stick around.

Even so, this situation seems to just keep getting worse, so we have to plan to replace him sooner than later.
