I dont remember hearing about it before 2005

I think you mean after Katrina. I'm not aware of any pre-Katrina attempts by Benson to move the team. Mecom wanted to move them to Jacksonville prior to selling to Benson. After Katrina there was a period where it was a very real possibility. Tagliabue was a major force in preventing it from happening.

Tagliabu kept the saints in New Orleans

Benson had been flirting and wanting to move for a couple years. Lots of demands to be met or he would leave. He was pushing for a new stadium and more money from the state and when they bucked, he threatened to leave. Renovations were proposed to the dome and he still cried. About that and subsidites. He didn’t even want to pay a fraction of the renovation cost to the dome. The state passed some sort of plan to pay him more to keep the saints here but he was set on a new stadium. The talked failed and he wanted out. Katrina happened and that was his out and figured he could use that as the reason. Remember he claimed that the practice facilities were un useable and ruined after fema vacated them and told them they could return. Fema went on record as well as released videos of the facility in better shape than when they got there ever wonder why they played a lot of games that year in SA? Benson also owned a lot of property there.
Now I’m not sure if post Katrina changed benson but he had no loyalty to NOLa prior to Katrina and tagliabu prevented benson from moving the team. Basically said you can’t leave after what happened.

When the Saints played at Tiger Stadium (against Saban and Dolphins I believe) they passed out these Save Our Saints banners. On the back their were quotes from Jerry Jones and Texas Governor about Texas being ok for a new team.
Made your blood boil.

Also - there was the famous meeting.
Benson met with Taglibue. Times Pic writer Chris Rose said - and I’m just relaying his story - that the big guy in that meeting who pushed for the Saints to stay was Roger Goodell.
Little skeptical about that factoid for obvious reasons

at the time they couldnt do more then match our sweetheart tax deal and the dome renovations would bring in just enough extra revenue to make it a break even deal to move or not move so he decided to stay.
most dont realize it damn near came down to a coin flip, and maybe it actually did

Benson was pushing for it, though the NFL never would have allowed it.

He threatened to move the Saints to Los Angeles around 97 or 98. I always feel like I'm the only person that remembers this.

I have a "San Antonio Saints"
Shirt I bought at a game at the Alamodome.
That was not an nfl ready stadium. But at least if wasn't empty like Tiger Stadium.
I thought for sure we lost the team
