Because a 1st round QB who gets his knee blown out mid season fricks you for 2 seasons as his ACL and meniscus heals for the next 11 months....plus you are paying him 25 million both years. Meanwhile, an OL costs you less and runs less of a risk for a season ending injury....they still get injured, though, but I can go out on the FA market and pick up a serviceable OL for the short term.
Think about this, Brees was successful for so long because he had top notch OL like Carl Nicks,Jahri Evans, Jermon Bushrod, Zach Strief et al. All those guys started for years did not miss a game and in the case of Nicks, Bushrod and Evans......perennial all pros and Strief was as reliable as the other 3.

If we’re giving the opportunity you draft Daniels let him sit next season and then you figure out what to do with Carrs contract after that

I don’t think he will be there. His draft stock is improving by the week.

Allen is trying to win now because this is his last shot as a hc in the nfl. He isn’t drafting a rookie and we are tied to Carr for 2 more years.
Maybe one more. The fourth year of the deal (2026) is largely fictitious - it’s a $50M option year with no guaranteed money. That will never happen.
Carr is effectively on a two year deal with a 3rd year option, with the guaranteed money in the first two years. If post 1 June 2025 cut, $5.7M cap hit with $40M cap savings. You could draft a quarterback this year and let him sit behind Carr for a year and then take over as early as 2025.
My guess is the Saints were hoping to hit the jackpot with the Carr but gave themselves an out after two years if it wasn’t working. It looks like the two options post 2024 are either draft a QB in 24 or 25 draft, or sign another free agent.
