Here's a couple interesting quotes from Loomis yesterday about QB, draft, free agency etc.

Saints keeping Jamis in mind

I'm sure some of yall saw this article from yesterday. I think it had a few interesting tidbits from Loomis.

quote:

"Hopefully we can get something done with one of the guys that's available," Loomis said from the NFL Combine in Indianapolis, "and Jameis is certainly an option for us and hopefully we're an option for him, as well. We'll go through the process here and see what happens."

I think they are kicking the tires on a lot of QB's, but if I had to guess they are leaning towards bringing Winston back if he will come.

quote:

"When you're picking in the latter half of the draft you just don't know what's going to fall to you, No. 1, so it's hard to target someone," Loomis said. "Even if you decide you want to make a move forward, you're limited in that – moving from where we're at, at No. 18, into the top eight or 10 picks is really difficult, it's expensive in terms of the draft capital that you have to give up. It can happen, it's not impossible. But it's pretty difficult to predict."

I think this shows they are not moving in the draft. Saints are picking at 18 and likely taking the best player available. I personally don't think they will take a QB at 18 and I'm fine with that. Hopefully they can find WR2 with the pick.

quote:

"We're expecting to have Mike back," Loomis said. "His progress hopefully is going well, and the reports are that it's been going well. I know he is certainly motivated; Michael is always motivated, so that's not an issue. But Tre'Quan (Smith) is a free agent, and Deonte Harris is an RFA (restricted free agent), so we've got some work to do to complete that room."

They obviously know they need work at WR, how that shakes out is anybody's guess.

quote:

In free agency, Loomis said New Orleans is unlikely to be a Day 1 or 2 shopper.

"Our philosophy is going to be, we're looking for value in free agency," he said. "We're going to be looking for a value player or two in that middle-market, low-market range."

Don't expect any big splash during free agency. They are value shopping. (which the team needs)

quote:

"I think that there's, based on what we've seen so far, I think there's a really strong group of receivers and defensive backs," he said. "And there's a couple of other positions, but we're still gathering that information."

It seems he knows they can find WR help in the draft. Question is what pick will they use to get some help there.

I love all of it. The only thing I may change for a big splash is if you can get an elite QB on a good deal (in our favor) which likely isn't happening.

Odd thing to say. I mean the guy is here. They know what his progress is.

I strongly believe we will draft a qb this year either in 1st or 2nd round while also resigning Jameis. I dig Pickett, Ridder, and Willis. Zappe if we pick in later rounds. WR will also be one of our earlier picks. Im hoping we get Treylon Burkes. If we go the free agency route, im hoping for DJ Chark.

and why is that? you had the guaranty of getting a 10-12th pick but instead you had to try to win meaningless games all in the name of sneaking in top the playoffs where you had no chance to win anything since you had no QB

same old saints, screw themselves over intentionally and then blame mediocracy on always having lack of better draft position

so they will intentionally not try for the best available and will instead settle for whatever scraps are left after serious teams get the best players

I thought it was an odd thing to say about MT also. Is he Nola rehabbing or is he with his own folks? Loomis kinda made it sound like MT people are sending reports to the Saints so he must be on his own.

I thought it a little odd also to rule out a big free agent at this point, but signing a big free agent is the most expensive way to add a player for strapped salary cap team.

Looks like the Saints will be trying to build in the draft and maybe a couple further down the list free agents.

I do agree that they need more value free agents to fill the roster. They have done a good job in the past finding value in free agency, so hopefully they do it again.

This is loser mentality. Never want this and destroys a locker room. Can’t just tell your team you are not going to go for the playoffs.

What part of we don’t have cap space do you not understand. Also this strategy has worked out way better for us over the years. Those big money free agents often under perform their contracts
