How do we know there wasnt signing bonus $$ to cover the difference. Some guys are just that way wanting to be the 'the highest paid guy'
If he copied Peyton's exact contract, he'd technically be paid the same, but the net worth is less, thanks to the time value of money.

I didn't say he wanted $25 mil....he doesn't want $25 mil.
He wants Mannings contract. Obviously the Saints aren't going to give the best player in franchise history the same contract another player in the league has already gotten.
So what if Brees wanted another $500k to be the "highest paid player?"

The total contract has been agreed upon. The upfront money for the first 3 years is the discussion. I can't believe the Saints have fricked up and let it come to this. Nicks is a gone pecan

Unless the NFLPA can get the cap raised, a contract like that could cripple the team cap-wise.
it's usually the opposite... an outright deal can be structured to minimize impact on the salary cap... the franchise tag will probably end up hurting the Saints cap number more, especially in the near term.
That's what some guy said on the radio yesterday... depending on what deal could've been worked out, the franchise tag could hurt the cap number by several million.

Cowboy fans seem to think Nicks is their's to lose now?? are they really the favorite to sign him? That would be a kick in the nuts!
Posted on 3/3/12 at 5:11 pm to biglil3
They are rebuilding the offensive line and they do have cap space. I have no idea who is favorite is.

The Saints haven't fricked up anything yet. Until they do, I'll trust them. They can replace Nicks or Colston and be okay.

I'm going to hate seeing Colston leave, but it's not huge.
I don't know man, 80 rec. 1143yds. and 8 TD's in 2011 for Colston.
Go compare Colston's career numbers to Greg Jenning's numbers. They were both drafted the same season. I just think Colston has always been underrated. Jennings is always getting mad props but what has he done that Colston hasn't?
Colston
Jennings

Will the league give us any compensatory picks in the draft if we lose nicks and colston?
Posted on 3/3/12 at 5:51 pm to LooseCannon22282
I agree Coltson is underrated, but I believe that keeping the core of one of the best offensive lines in the league together is a better option than keeping a receiver. As long as we Meachem, I think we'll be fine on the outside, and like I definitely think the Saints will take a receiver at some point in the draft.
I'm in no way comparing Dave Thomas to Colston, but him coming back next will will give Brees another reliable target over the middle and will complement Graham very well.

The fact is this the beginning of the end of the best era in saints history. It was great while it lasted but this is how the nfl is set up. It is difficult to be good over long periods unless you have an extremely strong front office. I love Brees but the way the cap works no one player can make 23 mill! So we have no colston or nicks. No way we are as good as last year. I hope it is better than I think but it is depressing that he can't just be the highest paid player in nfl history! Let's be honest he is great but how much better than Brady? Not this much. It just freaking sux that even the good guys are so greedy. I want him to be respected but crippling the team is rediculous and anybody who says we should just open up the checkbook doesn't understand the nfl at all.

Meachem is more of a deep threat then a possesion WR like Colston. I realize that the offense didn't miss much of a beat when Colston was out; but its not like he has missed a huge bulk of games other than in the 2008 season.

All part of Loomis's master plan

They already do.
Why don't you say the same thing about guards....no guard should make $8.1 million? That $8.1 mil contributes to the Saints not being able to pay Brees $23 mil. Manning's contract set the bar just like Evans' contract last year set the bar for guards.

Franchised Brees

Drew Brees is a top 5 QB easily, so he should make top 5 QB money.
LOL, thats exactly what the TAG does. You really don't know WTF you're talking about do you ? LOL

Wow. If you can't take care of Drew fricking Brees then something is wrong. ETA: Not "internally", I just mean you should give Drew Brees whatever he wants. He deserves it. The principal behind the franchise tag isn't good. We needed to give him a nice, juicy contract. This is ridiculous.
Why the fuk is brees demanding 24 mill? The highest paid qb makes 14.5. I like drew but fuk him. He is being a greedy bitch.

Haven't read all of this thread, but all things considered franchising him for this season quite likely works out best for both sides.
People throw out the reported numbers, but it's important to remember that there all sorts of ways to calculate a quarterbacks "annual salary". But let's just say the Saints are at 18mm and Condon/Brees are at 23. It seemed impossible to get creative enough to make something work with the cap limitations by Monday (unless you're resigned to allowing Nicks, Colston and others walk). So now, assuming both parties are in good faith (and I think they pretty much are), they have more time to work on a long term deal, and the Saints have a chance to retain Nicks and/or Colston and/or others.

I'm glad you picked a post that was completely wrong to tell me I don't know what I'm talking about.
