Yeah Spotrac with Coleman, Brees, Snead added and Strief subtracted has us at 9.8M

If any of y'all had paid attention drew still was counting 18 mil against the cap weather or not he was on the ten this year so in all actuality it is only 6 mil more

Using @spotrac as my reference, the Saints have around $10 million left under the salary cap. I’m including Coleman’s deal (not on the site). The site also includes estimated cap costs for each draft pick

Bad move Larry. spotrac doesn't do effective cap space for draft picks, just actual space.

Each pick replaces someone in the Top 51, meaning each pick will cost about $600k less because of this.

Really only the first round pick will dent our cap. If we stay put I think it'll add about $2-2.5 mil to the cap with all the picks.

So accounting for that we have roughly $9-10 mil in space. Adding in the 52nd and 53rd players it's about $8-9 mil. But between now and then people can be cut or take paycuts so right now if we want it's about $12 mil.

Forgot about Snead and Strief. I think Strief and Coleman basically cancel each other out. Not sure what Snead's number is but I'm guessing $1.5 mil max.

Not to mention we have not done our annual contract purge/restructuring. If there was a guy the Saints had to have, the cap would not be holding us back in the slightest.

False. He was only counting $6 mil, so this adds $18 mil.

The other $12 mil only came into play if he had hit FA, which he didn't. That means he counts $6 mil (plus new money) next year and $6 mil in 2020.

Plus he was reportedly offered 2 year 60 mill all guaranteed and turned it down. He could have held the Saints feet to that fire and what would we have done? Signed Cousins?

No offense, but this is likely not true and purely a Pr move to try and make Drew look like he took a huge cut. Facts are likely this was no where near the offer any other team made. Even Cousins only got $28 mil per year. Brees got $27 mill for this year.

Still like this deal, Chad???
24 of our 32 cap space right here.
I know Drew supposedly had better offers which he never was going to take but I was hoping he would have helped the team more.
After all he has earned close to 200 million as a professional QB and he has said winning is more important. But he still took his money.

He took market value, which any reasonable human being would do.

If you have a top flight QB, they are going to heavily count against your cap. He still falls in that category.

couple of restructures right? Bone had the list but I didn't save it

I think Jordan, Armstead, and Unger have roster bonuses that can convert to save money. Unger's wasn't much.

Also Hill and/or Hooman and Banjo could be cut or take paycuts. Morstead may get extended to lower his hit.

Money is definitely not keeping us from signing people. It just seems we have a value in mind for players and aren't willing to overpay (though I thought we overpaid for Klein last year).

This cap hit alone shows the Saints are not going to overpay for FA's. Eventually they will have to deal with the dead money from Brees. This 2019 cap hit also shows that they are going to invest in a top rated rookie QB at some point....

That makes the most sense -- and adds up to the $24M and $33.5M cap charges over the next two years that @FieldYates reported (with $10.5M dead money left over in 2020). Or they can convert roster bonus next year and make it $27.5M in 2019 and $16.5M dead in 2020.

Yeah I figured he had a roster bonus next year to push the money.

So we have to pay that bonus or cut bait next year. This will be an interesting year.

Just curious where the extra $4.5 mil in 2020 came from. Seems something isn't being reported correctly and the signing bonus is spread over 3 years.

Doing the math, 24 + 33.5 = 57.5. Take away the 6 mil in 2018 and 2019 and that's 45.5, leaving 4.5 for 2020.

So it seems the signing bonus reported may only be counting 2018 and 2019. I'm guessing it's actually $14.5 mil. That's splits about $4.8 mil.

Well, looks like Drew really did a ton to help this team have flexibilty and get better.

Considering that Loomis had structured deals where we owed 18 million regardless to the cap, what can you do.

Signing a 2 year deal splits that to 9 million toward the cap over what he is getting paid each season. So if Brees is getting 25 million a year then it is really 34 million against the cap.

He turned down $60 mil guaranteed, what more do you want from him.
