Deep Diving the cap again: Pray the cap is not 180mil
Posted on 1/26/21 at 11:47 pm
Posted on 1/26/21 at 11:47 pm
As it stands we're at 292mil, a projected 112mil over the 180mil projected cap. Some reports have said, there's a possibility that the cap could actually be 190-195mil and not as low as we once thought.
That being said: If it truly is 190-195mil, easy. If its 180mil, holy shite its hard.
Seriously this was annoying to do, but I think its feasible. Gonna be A LOT of work and somehow I kept nearly everyone as well. Some moves are obvious and some are ones you may think "well maybe not". All of them reasonable based on numbers across the league though.
Retire:
Drew Brees - saves 13.5mil - goodnight sweet prince.
Nick Easton - saves 6mil - all those concussions...
Thomas Morstead - saves 2.5mil - his leg seemed off. maybe injury, maybe not. Punters can go on forever though
Restructure:
Cam Jordan - approximately 10mil
Mike Thomas - approximately 9mil
Andrus Peat - approximately 6mil
David Onyemata - approximately 4mil
Malcolm Jenkins - approximately 3.5mil
Demario Davis - approximately 3mil
Will Lutz - approximately 1.8mil (I hope its an injury and not the yips)
Extend:
Taysom Hill - I honestly do not think this is going to be the smart idea. I 100% do not believe he is the solution at QB. I do 100% believe he is a pet project and going to continue being a part of this weird fetish package that CSP loves so much. That being said, we did him a solid last year paying him 2/21 and giving him 17mil guaranteed. I think he's willing to help us out (somewhat) while guaranteeing himself another couple of years of 8 figure pay. Extend 2/20mil and give him 10mil signing bonus now. 10mil for a backup/swiss army knife isn't the "worst idea", just not a great one.
- saves us 8mil
Ryan Ramczyk - I don't think he's going to seek 'record breaking money', but I can definitely see him wanting top 5 RT money. Jack Conklin who is pretty much his equivalent signed a 3/42 (30mil guaranteed, 15mil signing bonus) contract with Cleveland this offseason. Extend Ram 5/75mil (45mil guaranteed, 20mil signing bonus). Give him a huge roster bonus for 2022 as well, which will allow us to restructure and spread that cap hit into year 6.
- Saves us 5mil for this year
Terron Armstead - going into his final year (since 2022-23 are dummy years), you gotta think we're thinking "keep the OL in tact and keep things going". He's only 30, a good idea would be to keep him for a few more years after that and he won't break the bank (i.e. top 5 LT money). He's due ~10mil base salary, 1.5mil in roster bonus, extending and adding a dummy year would help us out now too. 3/45mil (30mil guaranteed, 15mil signing bonus).
- Saves us 8mil
Janoris Jenkins - you gotta admit, even at his age he's still productive. under contract for 2 more years at a reasonable price (2/16.3) its a bargain. The issue will be when the wheels will fall off, but when? Maybe its worthwhile to just see it go on a little longer. Maybe its not. Extending him a year and freeing up the cap space this year would be a reasonable idea and then cut him after next year? Extend+restructure his contract by a year, give him a 10mil signing bonus and make his base salary 1mil this year.
- Saves us 7mil
Malcolm Brown - since coming from NE, he's a steady NT for us, can push the pocket as well. He's still young and still productive going into his final year. Pay the man for another 3-4 and extend him. Give him a 5-6mil signing bonus.
- Saves us 3-4mil
Josh Hill - is the CSP pet of the day. Extending him another couple years
- Saves us 1mil
Cut:
Kwon Alexander - saves 13.4mil (plan is to bring him back later)...idk at the cost
Unsure cap issues:
Jared Cook - based off his contract #s for OTC, the 2021 season part should be voidable only leaving back 2mil of dead cap. The issue is, he currently counts for 11mil on OTC. Cutting him leaves us just the dead cap, so saves us 9mil from their #s.
Unsure of what to do:
Marshon Lattimore - while I think he has elite potential, its fair to say, he has underwhelmed and takes way too many games 'off'. Motivation is an issue at times and its a conundrum. As it stands, giving him 5 years/100mil (Ramsey/Humphrey money) would be stupid. But, you could very well extend him to what Darius Slay got paid and maybe he'll be happy. 3/50 (14mil signing bonus). Now if someone offered you a 2nd and 5th, you probably take that and try to find a #1 CB somewhere else.
- Saves us roughly 6mil extending him
Contracts I have yet to touch:
Emmanuel Sanders - 10mil cap hit (6mil dead), 4mil saved if cut. He's still a valuable guy, so I figure why not keep him.
Alvin Kamara - 5mil cap hit. Touching his contract doesn't really help at all, but yal should look at the final year of his contract. Holy shite I died.
Latavius Murray - 4.2mil cap hit. 2.5mil saved (1.7mil dead). I think he's worth it, he has 2 years left and he's always productive and dependable when you call on him.
Patrick Robinson - 3.85mil cap hit. When he played this year, he was serviceable. He's just so goddamn injury prone. Cutting him saves 2.6mil (1.25mil dead cap). The question is, as the 1st backup to Lattimore/Jenkins/CGJ is he worth his cost? I think so.
Tre'Quan Smith - 2.4mil cap hit. 2.2mil saved (200k dead). You gotta think this is a low-risk high reward deal last year of his contract, but if the money is tight and necessary...you'd think we might have to cut him right?
That being said: If it truly is 190-195mil, easy. If its 180mil, holy shite its hard.

I believe that if Brees' retirement is effective June 1, $11.5M of his cap hit gets pushed to 2022.
My guess is that is why he won't "retire" until the new salary cap number is announced.

I'd trade you the Bears cap issues for the Saints. The only big cuts they can make will gut the team back to 3-13 (Mack/Fuller/Hicks/losing AR12.) Stafford or Ryan (domino from Stafford going home to Georgia) make a ton of sense for the Aints. Giving as much money as you did to a gadget QB was almost a bad as the Bears deal with Quinn!

Nick Underhill laid out scenarios for the Saints to create cap space and they’re not really that difficult.

The league should consider doing something to give teams relief in some way. There are 10 or more teams including the Saints that are projected to be way over the cap

It’s one thing to get down to the cap number, it’s going to be another to get down to the number and then get below it enough to replace or resign our 21 free agents

You don’t pay attention to the Saints and Payton if you think Smith is getting cut

They’d cut Sanders without thinking twice before they cut Smith.

At overthecap.com, I found this: overthecap.com
Saints current cap space is ($112,187,767).
Drew Brees as a June 1st cut entered into the calculator adjust the cap to ($87,848,267).

You can restructure, extend, and trade players to get an idea of what the Saints may do.
I don't attest to the accuracy of any of the calculations at the site.

We need to be under the cap before the season starts right?

I think this was Hills last year. The guy is slower than the slowest slow.
If Sanders doesn't restructure I think he is gone with Harris, Calloway and Smith in the house. Smith is cheap and we can draft WR speed throughout the draft.
Cook should be a gon pecon!
And If it comes down to keeping a #1 CB vs our #1 pass rusher I hope we keep the latter.

Total cap down 1/3 then entire league should take a 1/3 pay cut or go collect unemployment
Posted on 1/28/21 at 7:59 pm to htran90
I am pretty sure Cook is gone. I think Sanders, Murray, and one of either Jenkins or P-rob could be gone. No hard feelings to any of them but you may see more rebuilding moves this year to try resign younger guys like Ram, Latt, and maybe Hendrickson
Posted on 1/28/21 at 8:37 pm to htran90
Now do all this over again for what it would take to trade for Watson and push a lot of high paid players off the roster then working the cap magic to make him fit?
