Coach Payton’s first down pass call was actually genius

Ever since the game the talking heads have been running their mouths saying the loss is actually Coach Payton’s fault for passing the ball on first down and not running the ball three straight times and forcing the rams to use timeouts. Obviously they never actually looked at the play critically. At worst this 1st and goal and the Rams with one timeout left and could likely be a walk in touchdown if Brees completes the pass like he would 99% of the time.

ETA: Apparently Brees audibled to a pass here. Still 100% correct decision

What the hell happened there? Inexplicable.

Brees checked out of the run play. Anyone who tells you this was the wrong call should be slapped. 100% the right call

The unfortunate thing here is that Brees choked at that moment. All just sucks.

That’s cover zero and if the OP showed some more screenshots you would see smith knock his man down and head to Talib

That’s a td or first down with a decent pass

That second picture hurts so bad, dude likely scores. I’d bet that pass is haunting Brees right now

Brees missed an easy throw. Ref missed an easy call. Throw in last year's Minnesota loss... obviously God hates us

Looks like a little OPI actually

Still can’t comprehend how that wasn’t ripped right in there though.

I think Brees is/was hurt. Gone back and looked at some throws late in the game. I also think he was pressing and maybe the Rams D line had him somewhat rattled. I don't know but something was up.

as long as it's within 1 yd of the LOS it's perfectly legal

LOS is the 13... block looks like it's happening at the 12... so as long as the pass gets there within the next half second it'll be a legal block

Tinfoil hat guy might say that Brees missing that easy pass (when we should have still run the fricking ball, don't care if Rams were in goal line defense) implies that he is in on the conspiracy.

Thanks for posting the overhead shot...my oh my ... how the frick did Drew fricken Brees miss that pass?

That is still just shocking.

from what I understand... it was essentially a RPO

but not like a RPO with a mobile QB... this was a RPO that was determined by how the defense lined up

it was a run play where if the Rams stack the box and go cover 0 then switch it to a quick hitter to MT13

the Rams lined up... all the DBs came into the box... it was 1v1 on the edge... the pass option was picked

This makes me sadder. How does Brees miss that?

please show me the next screen cap or 2 that shows that TLL had cleared out the 1st guy and was ready to smack around Talib

I want to know without a doubt that MT13 was about to walk into the EZ

I'm so stunned that Drew missed that pass

ETA: shite... TLL just needs to hold that 1st block and then it's a foot race to the pylon between Thomas & Talib... and Thomas wins that going away

if he immediately cuts outside to the boundary... it's definitely a touchdown

if he cuts back to the middle of the field it's definitely a 1st down with a chance of being a TD
