Can the Saints get out of this contract?

Derek Carr signed a four year, $150 million contract with the Saints on March 6, 2023. $100 million of the contract is guaranteed, with $60 million fully guaranteed at signing. Per PFT, Carr received a $28.5 million signing bonus and his 2023 and 2024 base salaries are fully guaranteed. If on the roster in March of 2024, a $10 million roster bonus due in 2025 will become fully guaranteed. Another $30 million in salary in 2025 will be guaranteed if on the roster that March. Carr has a no trade clause as part of his contract. We are assuming that the Saints included a void year for salary cap purposes but that is not yet confirmed.

Yep.
I was saying all offseason letting Dennis Allen make roster decisions - especially signing a QB - was a huge mistake. He was a dead man walking.

hardly anyone has a bad word to say about him as a person but you have to separate that into results on the field.

You have to remember this is the same Derek Carr who couldn't handle having his mail read in front of the team and thought he was immune to public criticism from the franchise decision makers.

I’d say his problem is in finding open receivers quickly enough…and he’s pretty much a statue when he can’t. Combine those traits with a poor OL and you end up with a bad result.

Anybody with half of a brain could’ve told you Carr was mediocre, at best. Why did they pay him such an outlandish amount of money? I think they were desperate to fill Brees’ shoes.

I just know that there is something very wrong with this offense.
And it isn't lack of talent.
i thought the O line played better today. I mean was it good enough? Not at all.
But there were plays where it appeared the protection was there and Carr didn't pull the trigger.

I think this was directly related to AK being back. He did a fantastic job at blitz pick-up, even though he did give up a sack after initially stonewalling a blitzer. And is a major weapon in the dump off game.

After next year, they can move on from his if they decide this is the correct direction. It's also why getting a rookie QB in 2024 may make since (unless Haener proves he's that guy)
If they cut him before 2024, his cap hit jumps from $35.7M to $52.8M. So this will obviously not work.
If they cut him before 2025, his cap hit drops from $45.7M to $27.1M. Not ideal, but manageable
Cut before 2026, cap hit drops from $55.7M to $11.4M
Of course, cutting him in 2025 only makes sense if you are running with someone on a rookie deal. As it stands his full contract is ranked 14th amongst QBs which is basically middle of the pack. And if the team is going the vet route again, they will need to sign someone to a similar deal (of course Mickey will do Mickey things) which will suffocate the talent and depth on the roster.
