Williams looks like he can step right into the safety spot, and we already have Vaccaro and Bell, so that means we have more options there.
That tackle by Williams as the RB was bursting through a very large hole likely saved a long TD run. He has been impressive.
Overall, that tackling on the defense has been improved.
DLine has been applying pressure.
Secondary blitzes have been getting to the QB for sacks/hurries.
Communication and scheme also seems much improved.
Mike Nolan has been a tremendous addition.
I'm cautiously very optimistic.
ETA: 10-6 / 11-5

they look a lot more confident. I know its just preseason but its been refreshing to see improvements no matter what the situation is.
as long as they continue to improve, it should be all good.
I know last years D wasn't that good but they were better than the 2015 unit.
I think they will be better this year almost by default. The shake up on the coaching staff and the number of new faces who will be counted on to make an impact on playing time.. first and foremost.
the biggest challenge will be how can they hold it together if/when the injuries start to happen. I think that's when we'll really notice the difference on the coaching staff? On defense anyway.

The D has played nasty this preseason it is just practice but atleast its a start. I think we are going to see a reversal in things this year. I think our offense will be more ball control this year and we will see lower scoring games than we our use to.

New Orleans Saints rookie class and defense: Three rookies started for the Saints' surprisingly frisky defense over the weekend: cornerback Marshon Lattimore, safety Marcus Williams and linebacker Alex Anzalone. Lattimore especially stood out against Houston, while rookie tackle Ryan Ramczyk and running back Alvin Kamara are also set for big roles.
It's only the preseason ... but Pro Football Focus has the Saints ranked second among all defenses in August. They won't stay anywhere close to that ranking when the real games start, but this group needed an influx of youth and speed. The early signs are promising. Free-agent pickup A.J. Klein could be the key to the entire group, as the linebacker could finally give the team some stability at the second level.

That's a nice article. But explain me this....
Why not? Why can't they stay anywhere near 2nd overall? I don't get it. Why are we so quick to say no? I'm not saying they will. Like most, I hope.
But, why not? This is not the same defense as last season. New guys at every level. DT and DE on one side of the line. New rotation. All new LBs. CBs that didn't play or weren't on the team. Aside from Vaccaro, all new Safties. New defensive assistants. New talent in all aspects of the defense.
So I ask again, why not?

I get it. 7-9 for 3 straight seasons with horrible D gets you no love from "experts" or media. But hell...I am optimistic as frick right now. I'm excited because I have seen things in this D that I haven't in 3 years. I'm no expert, by any means. I just like what I see. I haven't said that in years.

People forget we went from worst defense ever to 4th overall in ONE year. And then they fricked with the roster and Ryan's scheme and it fell apart.

After giving up 777 yards and a 94.8 Total QBR over their first two games, they've only allowed 794 yards and a 24.0 QBR over their last five.
Just keep improving and the rest will take care of itself.
