i'd be okay with a 3rd rounder straight up... without all these stipulations..

but since they are tied up with the mcnabb trade.. perhaps a 2nd rounder would have been fine if we gave them a selection back... but i hate seeing us have to give up a 5th.. for only a 3rd or 4th.. and a starting tackle..

a conditional 3rd is about as good as we could do considering we had no leverage at all

Not much more valuable back then and Faulk was 26 coming off a year with over 2200 all purpose yards. Infinitely more valuable than an injured OT who hasn't played in a year.

I just think the Saints should have tried to get Haynesworth. A straight up 3rd from a bad team (like Buffalo) would have been acceptable. A 3rd from a team that will probably be in the middle of the pack (Skins) is about the cutoff, not worth it when even if we do get the 3rd, we still have to send something back. I would have preferred they just held on to him for one more year. We have a chance to repeat. We should get as much immediate help as we can, especially after we just spend an entire draft basically picking future contributors. JB could have been that immediate help, an upgrade over the promising but inconsistent Bushrod.

You cant just compare trades to determine a guy's worth.

Brandon Marshall just went for two 2nd rounders

Jay Cutler went for two 1st rounders and a 3rd rounder

Donovan Mcnabb went for a 2nd and 3rd or 4th rounder.

Jason Campbell went for a 4th rounder.

There's not really any correlation between those trades. Its just kind of random; whatever the teams can work out

I'm not talking about Faulk vs. Brown, LTs in general are much more valuable than RBs. You can plug any running back in and have sucess, you plug in the wrong LT and your franchise QB could be on IR. It's a simple concept.

Maybe Buffalo wasn't offering this.

Considering he's coming off an injury this isn't 100% guaranteed.

if you can find me one instance of a busted up OT with one year left on his deal going for a 3rd or higher, I'll concede this point

I think it's pretty obvious at this point that the coaching staff thinks higher of Bushrod than the fans do

And the Seahawks traded 2010 pick #40 and a likely very high 2011 3rd for 2010 #60 and Charlie fricking Whitehurst. It's hard to compare trades, because you'll always find lopsided deals going both ways. Looking at this one objectively, it's mediocre at best.

He needed to sign his tender for the trade to happen. That's why we couldn't trade him during the draft.

I think that the front office just needed to dump the $3.6 million in salary. I've been very pleasantly surprised at the willingness to spend the big bucks, and there was no way it was worth $3.6 mil for someone who might not start.

In any case, Bushrod is acceptable and Payton says that he is still improving as a player. Zach Strief has also demonstrated the ability to keep Drew Brees upright. We drafted Charles Brown, who has a great upside, so we're absolutely fine at the tackle position.

Ok tough guy.

All i said is that you cant compare trades to determine a guys worth. Saying Marshall Faulk went for a 2nd and 5th is irrelevant.

The Saints got two firsts for Ricky Williams

Is it a great trade? Absolutely not.

But I'm just not ready to say a conditional third for a player coming off IR with an expiring contract is the worst thing in the history of the universe.

Honestly I think people are being bitchy because it wasn't for Haynesworth...

That's fine, I'm not going to put much stock into those speculated trades. I'm just using it as an example of what falls into my "It's worth dealing him given our depth at the position" and "Let's just ride him out one more year."

I dont think people are bitching because its possibly a 3rd. The problem is that theyr'e also giving up a pick.

Brown for a 3rd is fine

Roaf played less than half a season and was traded for what ended up being a 3rd, but of course he's in a totally different league.

Not as good of a deal I got on Madden.

Houston Texans send a 1st(2011), 5th(2011), and rookie LT Charles Brown(USC) to New Orleans Saints for LT Jammal Brown. Shake and bake!!!

I thought J Brown would have warranted more than what the Saints received, but evidently the current labor agreement situation the league is facing has definitely affected trades, and the value of players. In years past, Saints would have benefited more in this trade imo.

Anyway...the Saints will still be better going forward with Bushrod and C Brown at LT for years to come.
